Cutting Foam Mattresses and Toppers

I have heard for years that cutting the 4+ Inch foam toppers, mattresses, new cushions is like cutting butter with an electric knife. Having no electric knife and being far removed from my Dad carving the Turkey with one we got with Green Stamps, I have slaughtered the edges on many over the years.

Needing to cut and custom fit our new 8" Spa Sensations mattress for the permanent bed, I finally broke down and ordered Black & Decker EK700 9-Inch Electric Carving Knife, White Heck it was only $11 and Prime so no shipping. Last week I brought the mattress inside and marked the dimensions on it including the curves on the back wall. I fired up the new knife and within no time I cut through that foam with a near perfect edge like it was a hot fresh loaf of bread. I will never cut foam again without my trusted Black & Decker at my side.

FYI, for ordering new foam for cushions I have always found this supplier to be terrific on quality, price, and shipping. Rochford Supply

topper foam and stowage recommendations?

Still pretty new to trailer camping and the scamp. The PO included a thin (2"?) Eggcrate foam topper that helps but does seem inadequate. Any recommendations for the type and thickness of foam, and how and where is it stowed?

Thanks

Doug

Configuration

Hey Doug,

Not sure what layout your 16 is or how many people, or how you use it. We always tried to do a permanent bed on the back dinette and use the front couch, but when we had the kids traveling couldn't do that. Usually had a 2-3" memory foam topper from Walmart. Some folks like the latex toppers if you camp in colder weather, because the memory foam can be hard until it warms up. Storing the topper if you need the table can be a bit of a pain, but we'd roll it tightly and put it in the covered bed of the PU.

Permanent bed setup, we'd remove the cushions and go with the spa sensations 8"   This is a dream if you can do this.

Bed Foam

Thanks for the input Greg.  Our Scamp has front bunk and what I refer to as the "room of requirement", a fairly large closet on the port side for the porta john.  Just my wife and I camping, with our two 50-ish pound dogs. Who, as it turns out, enjoy shoving their way into bed with us given the tiniest chance!  I think we are kind of stuck using the table, unless we can do the outside dining thing so Ill look at the slightly thinner topper option, as both you and other Doug recommneded.  Thanks!

Doug

We have the layout 6 I

We have the layout 6 I believe, side dinette and front bath and potty, no couch. We leave the rear bed set up as a permanent bed, and utilize the side dinette for yet another bed. We have 4 inch memory foam for both beds too.

Got,our foam topper for th side dinette bed. Got it from Amazon. Not at all expensive and works great. My bride cut a sheet to dedicate to it, and closes it with Velcro. We roll it up in the morning and stow it in the tow vehicle.

Foam questions

Hi - Thanks for your post.  Can I ask a couple questions?

Have you covered the foam with any material or cover?

Do you put the foam on top of your Scamp cushions or underneath?

Thanks,

Marty

8" Spa Sensations (Zinus) Fiber glass (?)

Greg, Refitting a Memory foam mattress sems like a great solution to follow the curves of the scamp but I read some horror stories about the removal of the mattress from its cover.   When cutting through your Spa Sensations Mattress, did you have any issues with fiber glass floating around?  If so, what did you do to contain?

Mattress

Hey Carl,

Not sure what the horror stories would be. No fiberglass involved just cutting the foam mattress corners and or width to shape. The mattress cover had a zipper down the side if I recall and we unzipped the cover and rolled it back far enough to make the corner cuts. Made a cardboard template of the corners and marked it on the foam. Electric knife cuts right through the foam like butter. If you have to cut some off the width, the electric knife cuts the foam so easily it would make short work of it.

When done cutting put the cover back over the foam and zip it back up..  There will be some slack in the mattress cover with some foam removed, but it simply just tucks under and ready for sheets.

Thanks Greg, your

Thanks Greg, your instructions on how to do this is very helpful!

When I was researching mattresses, Reddit had this sub thread on the zinus causing havoc if the zip up cover was removed entirely:

Your approach makes this a non -issue.
