question about the vin decoder and my possible scamp

Hi, I am new to both this forum and fiberglass rvs.  We purchased an untitled 13 foot egg with a camo paint job and lots of needed repairs about a week ago.  We have a lot of work ahead and want to be rewarded with being able to pull it where and when we want so want to title it.  I have bill of sale and even know the owner two owners back, who had it several years, who also purchased it untitled.  For us to title it, we need maker and year.  Part of the problem I am encountering is that I think it has been extensively changed/rebuilt as am finding no others that look completely like it.

It does have a number E1887 stamped on front frame.  Having seen this forum while searching for a camper, we saw the vin decoder for Scamps and believe at least the frame, and maybe the lower half of the camper is Scamp, but it really looks like we have a mutt...thinking wrecked top and rebuilt with a different maker.  So am really just attempting currently to identify the frame maker and year, unsure yet but think that will get us registered.

Since the first number in the vin is 1, would that be 1971 or 1981, what makes that distinction?  Please let me know how you tell if it is 71 or 81 from the vin...maybe the remaining numbers hold the key.? I actually already sent an email to Scamp and they replied that they never had vins that started with E (?).  Can someone please verify this for me, I let them know it was very old and probably predated the 17 digit vin system.

Also, please look at my photos....does it look like Scamp camper frame---please disregard anything above the frame unless you think it further proves Scamp, or any other particular camper if you know.  I think this has had extensive rebuilts/mods though is almost stripped now.

Thank you so much for your help.

Frame

Is the frame material tube or channel iron? The 17 digit Vin for Scamp started some time in 1982.

It is channel. Figure its1971

It is channel. Figure its1971 or 1981 IF its Scamp based on the E type sn/vin. Anyone out there have one closely numbered or know difference in a 1981 or 1971 sn/vin?  I have lots of pics but noy sure what to post to help determine, especially since i think at least the door,  taillights and top half are all probably changed out.

Frame

Casita uses channel Iron for their frames. Every Scamp I have ever seen  has a 1.5" X 3" tubular frame and I have seen quite a few. In the picture the frame appears to be galvanized which Scamp did not do. I think 1971 was the first year of production and they only produced a couple of hundred trailers in the first two years so you should have a low VIN#. Scamps have cutouts in the shell where the frame goes under the trailer. Scamps also have plywood floors in the earlier models, around 84 they switched to OSB floors. If the trailer has a gelcoat bottom it is not a Scamp. I saw your pictures on the other forum and I don't know who made your trailer.

Sorry

Eddie

Finding Out What You've Got...

You might want to take a look at the "Sold" section of Fiberglass RV 4 Sale and compare your pictures to any older Fiberglass RVs listed and sold on that site. At least, you have a couple of good hints on what to look for and what you should find on a Scamp.

Also, I recently met a man with a "Hunter" fiberglass RV he had rebuilt, so, you might want to focus on the unusual name brand trailers first.

Additionally, if you do not want to go through all the hassle and research, you might want to look into what it would take to register the trailer as a "home-built" or "Salvage vehicle.

Also, your State may not require registration for trailers under 2,500 lbs. If that is the case, simply rebuild it and enjoy it and sell it with a "bill-of-sale" to the next guy, all perfectly legal and above board. If you are worried about traveling out-of-state, the rules of the State where the Tow Vehicle is registered will follow the trailer wherever you go (No registration requirement means No registration required).

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!
