Extended Bed Mod

In a recent trailer listing I noticed a fabulous extended bed modification.  This is one of the nicer extended bed mods I have ever come across.  This trailer is actually a boler, but the same mod can be done in a Scamp 13' or Scamp 16' Trailer.  Love it!

Here are some pics:

Hadn't See This Before

Thanks for posting that.  I had not seen a bed extension except for the one that some do with the 5th. It looks good.  I think people with FGRVs are some of the most creative people out there!

I have been working on a bed

I have been working on a bed extension idea and then I saw this one.  Is the extension on any type of rail/drawer guide?  It appears to be attached in the closed position and attached in the extended position but I do not see a transport framework.  Does this system come completely loose and then is reattached in the extended position?

Bed Extension

These are photos from a trailer that was for sale, so there are no instructions or write-up on the mod.  But the up-close pictures are very good.  So, just looking at it, it appears that.....

there is a gold latch that anchors the table at the back for traveling, as well as two silver pieces near the folded legs at the front that secure it as well.  Due to the center slit you can tell that it indeed "slides out." Those same two silver pieces near the folded legs act as a guide.  Once out, what supports the table are the four legs that fold down as well as the male "silver round disk in the back" that swivels around once extended and inserts into the female end on the front of the table.  Hope that helps.  Anyone else who can add to or clarify this for knebrdr, please do so.

If someone can figure out how

If someone can figure out how to do this, I would appreciate directions.  (I don't have time to figure it our on my own!)  THANKS!

Pin Interest

I don't "do" Pin Interest but the bed extension appears there but since I don't have or want an account, the only info I could get is that it is a 1974 Raised Black'N'White Boler Bed Extension.  I'm going to continue to poke around and see if I can find anymore details.

Couldn't find anything else but saw it larger in a photos and I would agree with JA-Admin.  Drawer slides, you can see the tracks and once out, the 4 legs come out.  Seems like you would end up with a track to cover before the mattress part goes on though.  The person selling described it as a "custom bed extension" and I found no "project" pics so wonder if he had a shop do it.

I figured out the system

I figured out the system after enlarging the pictures of the extension in the closed position.  Directly behind the outer/front leg you can see a U bracket that the extension slides on.  You unlatch (the brass latch towards the rear of the extension) the extension, slide it out, drop the legs, grab it and set it down on the legs.  The legs have slider felt on the bottom to ease movement.  Drop the table down, attach the extension using the 2 click latches and set down your additional mattress.  I was looking for a more sophisticated slide system similar to a refectory table slide/lift.

Since we are currently waiting to place our order so it coincides with our annual ND/MN trip to see the MILs/Moms can anyone give me dimensions on the Scamp 16' Standard bed and what they think the dimension will be on the extension.  The reason I ask for this is the Parkliner comes with a queen bed which could cause us to purchase a PL.  I know about the communication issues that exist with the people at PL and this might be the cause of them being eliminated from the final purchasing decision.

Thanks,

Randy

Pinterest

Just FYI, I went and checked out the Pinterest Bed Extension that Snow Gypsy referenced above that she had found via a search engine.  It is just pictures.  There is no explanation/instruction on the mod.  sigh....

Bed Dimensions

Know that bed dimensions are really hard to get and I found several variations depending on how they measured.  From what I understand, a place to start thinking, the standard bed is 44" wide by 78", and I have heard as little as 75" on the length but you are working with a curve on the back.  If I understood what I read, you can now get a 54" wide bed in the 16'.  This is one of our biggest issues, the bed sizes.  Be aware that nearly all or all of the RV manufacturers cheat on the bed sizes, RV queen could be 60" but might be 56" x 75 (usually not 80) and full or double can be as narrow as 44" and as short as it takes to fit in the space.  Even if you are contacting the manufacturer, it can still be hard to shake loose dimensions, actualy inside height is another that it seems like they try to "blur".  When something isn't an "island" bed, you either climb over or crawl down.  Crawling has never been my thing and I didn't crawl as a baby so starting now.............   It has really been frustrating and then I have to have every detail in order to make a decision.  We considered building at one point, just your standard old-fashioned type.   With the Scamp, I would go with the 54".  I thought since the EggCamper was "big" compared to most of the others that the bed would be "big", ah, no, it is 53 x 75.  In another forum, I followed Parkliner for awhile but I lean toward tried and true which is why I am still trying to work with considering the Scamp as I love, love, love the deluxe!

Just a thought but I wonder if there would be a way to just make a second Scamp table work as the pull-out on the bed making necessary adjustments to it or maybe purchasing a generic similar table since I think they are all about the same or that has been our experience.  OK, I'm rambling.

***Edit:  Today I learned that the bed in the EggCamper is 80" plus long.  On another forum, a member posted a photo to show me how their 80" mattress fit.  If we buy new, which looks likely, it will probably be the EggCamper.  Maybe we can get the Scamp after my husband shrinks?  I don't know, I told him that I thought he was supposed to shrink but no luck yet.  All those extra dollars for long and tall clothing over the years..............

Easy Bed Extension

A light weight, and easy, solution to adding a bed extension would be to purchase a small foldable plastic table (See link below). These tables come in various sizes with fold out legs.

All you  need is a table approximately as wide as the area in front of the bed (two to four inches too narrow would not be a problem) you could then shorten the legs with a tubing cutter (pre-measure the legs to ensure the cross bar is not in the way) and simply place the table and your custom cushions down before retiring.

Additionally, you could cut some PVC pipe to extend the legs (which you just shortened) and use the table during the day making this a perfect "double duty" table.

Here is an example of the type of plastic table I am talking about:

Note: this table even comes with adjustable legs (maybe no cutting involved).

Just one solution to consider.

As always,

Happy Scamping !!!

MwaV,

MwaV,

The idea behind the table extension is to enlarge the bed with out having to carry any additional loose items.  In a trailer this small you do not want to waste storage space carrying a large table.
