Anyone towing a 16' deluxe with a Toyota Highlander or a Subaru Ascent? I'm very interested in your experience towing with those vehicles.

We're on our third Highlander towing our '17 Scamp 16 (not deluxe, but we load it up and carry a canoe and bikes on the car too). Never had a problem. Our Highlander is the 6 cyl, 3.5 liter (I think) engine. Mileage isn't fabulous (c. 16-17 mpg on long trips), but that's not what we got it for. I do use a sway bar and rarely go over 65mph (except on straightaways in no wind with no big rigs in sight. The Highlander has been ideal for our Scamp use.

We have a 2006 Scamp 16 Standard which weighs about 2350 lbs. when we travel. We're on our second Highlander Hybrid, with a towing capacity of 3500 lbs. Works great and gets about 18 mpg when towing. We keep speed to about 62.
I have towed our 16-ft deluxe with a Dodge Grand Caravan with a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. The vehicle was underpowered and labored on big hills and strong winds. The standard trims of the Ascent and Highlander would be similar (2,000-3,500 lbs) I now tow with a Dodge Durango (6,000 lbs capacity) and it is great. The higher trims of the Ascent and Highlander can tow 5,000 lbs and should be fine. I recommend shopping around and getting one with a towing package.
I use a 2nd Generation Honda Ridgeline. They are in the medium class pick up group with a 5000 pound towing capacity. They are not compatible with a 5th wheel since they have a composite bed but handle the 16 and 13 Scamps easily, even the heavier wood Deluxe models. My 16 Deluxe weighs in at 2600 lbs.

We have a 2022 Lexus 350h hybrid 4cyl that will be towing our new 2024 Scamp Lite 13' when we pick it up next month. We are currently getting around 40 mpg when not towing, so I'm curious to see what that will drop to when pulling the Scamp. I will let you know how it does driving back to California from Minnesota!
