hi, we just picked up a 1993 Scamp 13' and are in process of keeping her retro but adding modern upgrades so she doesn't look so tired!! New wooden doors, new butcher block counter top, new handles and hinges, new covers and foam, new cooktop and sink. Ok so maybe she will be modern than retro but we are keeping the fibreglass panels - although I am trying to work out if I want to paint them!!!
We just came from a Sportsmobile so the sizing is about the same for us. I am 5'2" (on a good day) and my husband is 5'11" We decided to convert the front bunks to a dinette so we could keep the bed down all the time. Our biggest frustration in any campers was setting the bed up each time. We kept all the hardware for the bunk and can re-install it if we need to and the dinette can covert into a bed.
We figured when we need the bathroom it will be time for the 16' upgrade !! At the moment we are good with our REI port-a-potty and our green elephant tent!!
I agree with "campnani" see if the 13' works before committing. It can be pretty tight if you are not used to that space!
Hi. I have read posts where owners have painted their fiberglass with appliance epoxy spray paint. (I have painted almost every surface known - but not fiberglass.)
I am 5'10", so I would be glad to hear how the height and bed (is it 54"?) works for your hubby.
Please feel free to post pictures of your bunk to dinette conversion!
I have already looked up the REI port-a-potty and Green Elephant tent. :)
As for trying out the tight space...I have never seen a 13' Scamp (or any Scamp) in our city, but will beg for a peek if I do! I know that I was a strange child who liked converting closets into play houses and always enjoyed the coziness of small places.
p.s. This sounded harsh! He is a great guy - but the bathroom issues still remain and there has not been a cleaning fairy that has appeared on our doorstop for all these years!
Late reply to your question - We also struggled with the decision of ordering Standard 13 vs Deluxe because we wanted the front dinette but not the extra weight that the wood cabinets added. (we have a small tow vehicle). So I gave up the awning option and dual propane tanks I wanted in order to keep the weight down and got the wood. The front dinette works well for us and having a full time big bed is handy. I think either decision would be fine.
Side note: We were a little disapointed when we lifted our dinette cushions at how cheaply made the bench underneath was. Rough raw plywood with just a thin coat of paint. The smooth fiberglass finish is much nicer.
Many benefits to a 13' but not for two large people. It can even go through drive through restaurant windows witch was a plus because of Covid and they will fit in the smallest of spots at camp grounds. I agree a camper is no place for a bathroom pit toilets and a shower twice a week is enough.
My wife and I have a 2016 13' standard Scamp with bunks. We are older now and leave the big bed set up. I have made a nice finished wooden box that sets between us on the bench when we have our meals. It is about 20" long 16 "wide and 6" tall. It is very stable and supports our small plates and tumblers well, it is a good compromise.
I have also made a large low box that slides under the bed it has a crutch foot that rides on the floor and supports it when the box (drawer) is opened, We keep our clothes, shoes and extra water stored in it. So far, these two wooden items have simplified our camping.
