13' MODEL - Are you happy with your model? Retro decor?

Hello again,

am still Scamp day-dreaming and wanted to ask a few more questions from expert owners.

I would like the 13' because, by the time our model arrives (in two years), our last two children will be out in the world (sniff sniff) and it will be just my hubby and I using the trailer. We have argued our entire married life over bathroom manners, so I would rather not have a toilet/shower to maintain and clean. I also like the idea of having a front dinette and the back table/benches made permanently into a bed but that only comes with Deluxe and I like the look and easability of the fiberglass cabinetry.

Has anyone regretted their choice of floor plans? Cabinentry? Bathroom (vs. none)? Etc. Does anyone have examples of making their egg look more retro (vs. modern)?

Thank you! :)

Fun planning

I didn't answer your previous post regarding the size of a 13'.  You really should check one out personally and thoroughly for "fit".  It really is teenie weenie living, especially the bed.  My husband and I have camped together in our 13', with front bench/bunks.  I sleep on the bench, he takes the bed.  It really works out best when I go by myself--I sleep on the bench and leave the dinette up.  I bought it basically for short solo trips for work.

In regards to decor.  I originally started out shopping for a tiny vintage trailer, love all that retro stuff!  But.  Since I was getting a trailer to take out on my own for business trips, the reality of a non-mechanical person on her own with a 50+ year old trailer sunk in.  I had always loved Scamps anyway, so I got mine and decorated it as if it were vintage!  I adore it.  Mine is a Standard, but I didn't do anything to it that can't be reversed to the "original" Scamp look.  So I used slipcovers over the seats, laid old-style linoleum squares over the vinyl (easily pulled up, just some easy contact glue) and did not paint anything.  Someday if and when I sell it, a buyer may not appreciate my creativity!  Here are some pics, you can do all sorts of fun decorating keeping in mind resale value.  I actually spent a week camping in it this past month, first long trip ever!  Ha ha, I had great weather every day so really only slept in it at night.

Fun Planning

Oh my goodness Rhonda, thank you so much for sharing your pictures! They are so inspiring. I once put VCT (hard vintage square) flooring (yellow and red) in a kitchen. I had not thought of adding squares as a possibility - too retro cute! I have to ask: Where did you find them? Are they peel and stick (with added glue)? Have they lasted well?

Did you make your own slip covers? Are they oil cloth, outdoor fabric, or simple cotton blend? They are so pretty.

Please send more pictures! It looks as if the curtains are a tangarine...? :>O

It was soooo fun!

Good guess, those are old-fashioned VCT tiles!  I was super lucky to score the turquoise color, it had been discontinued and I couldn't find it anywhere online.  I went to a local flooring company and a great salesman somehow tracked down a box for me.  We just used some tacky contact cement to put them down, they can be taken up easily if someone wanted to.  My husband laid them, and under the kitchen and at the back of the Scamp he heated them a bit to curve them.  I did a very fussy job putting down floor trim too--that is also glued down.  I used some somewhat flexible plastic trim--some parts had to be bent.  Lots of filing and fiddling was involved!  I had to weigh them down from the side to keep them in place while curing.  All the sewing was done by a talented lady who did it as a side biz.  The curtains were easy, she used the Scamp curtains as patterns.  Double faced so that bright orange shows on the outside too (ha ha ha, my husband picked the orange, he is not much of a decorator but he was spot on with that color!).  The slipcovers have an open drawstring bottom to take them off.  Unfortunately, the fabric I fell in love with is dry clean only.  So far with the light use I give it no problems.  It took me a couple months to get everything done a little at a time.  Pics of bottom of slipcovers and my bullnose corner.  Not perfect, but it looks okay from eye level!  You will have fun tricking out your Scamp too!

VCT tiles

Wow! Your tiles and trim look so nice. I was thinking of the thinner "peel and stick" variety tiles (which I have also installed). VCT are much more work - but look so authentically retro! ;)

I cannot see your picture of the slip covers. Not sure why. My screen shows your tiles fine and a tiny picture insignia where the slipcovers should be. :/

Thank you for sharing and inspiring! I have several sets of vintage fruit towels and am already dreaming of sewing them into curtains....sigh.

We have the 13" standard w/

We have the 13" standard w/ bath.  It seems pretty retro, or mid-century modern as my wife likes to say.

No regrets, the fiberglass cabinets and the bath in the front work well for us.  One way too decide is completely ignore the price and other constraints, and imagine the ideal setup; then work out how to get as close as possible.

13' standard with bath

After having read these comments, and thinking of the fiberglass cabinetry, I am thinking I want a standard unit. My ideal is a ready made 54" bed with a front dinette, but that is not (as you know) and option in fiberglass cabinets. I am now wondering if I can make a front bench work with TV trays as a dining area...? I really like the idea of the bathroom...but just know that hubby and I would not agree on standards of cleanliness and the actual cleaning.

Happy, but it's got to be right for you

13 ft Scamp camping is tight.  There is no way around it.  If you haven't been in one, you need to before you commit.  I have a 13 ft with bath and big bed.  I needed the night time potty, and that was the reason we upgraded from a T@G teardrop.  I love it!  But...we have a 55 lb Goldendoodle who sleeps on the floor with her blankies and it is a crazy dance to step over her when we get up in the middle of the night.  I'm always first up to make coffee, & in order to move around the kitchen, she moves up onto the bed.  I'd love to have a dinette set up permanently, and it sounds like that will be your plan.  But the bathroom was the big motivator for us in purchasing our Scamp, so it's not doable.  We enjoy eating most meals out under the awning anyway, but several days of rainy weather will send us packing.  As for decorating, Scamp interiors are pretty boring, so anything you do will be exciting.  I've only added new curtains, cupholders, cute quilt, lots of command hooks & suction hooks, & velcro mesh bags on the rat fur.  But I'm not much of a decorator.  Seriously, though.  Find a 13ft and get inside, to see if it will work for you.

Happy :)

I have not stepped into a 13' Scamp since I was a young girl. I've only seen a handful at campgrounds over the years, but never saw the owners. I contacted Scamp this week to see if they could put me in touch with an area owner, but they have suspended (due to Covid).

So impressive that you have a sweet Goldendoodle to add to the camper mix! We have two smaller dogs (9 and 14 lbs) who would be with us as well.

I am thinking of your reflection that most meals are eaten outside...that would be the case for us as well...we are in NC and would use this primarily for 1-2 day trips until hubby retires...then longer trips to mountains.

Please feel free to add any pictures of your quilt decor, curtains, cup holders, command hooks, etc. Sounds great!

Check out FB

Hommyjoy, I'm not sure where you are located, but if you join some of the Scamp FB groups like Strong Women Scamp or Scamp Owners Non Political, you could see if there are any 13s near you that owners would be willing to show, Covid considerations in place, of course.  I've found those 2 groups, as well as this forum, to be a wealth of all Scamp information and a very friendly place.  I know if someone near me were to ask, I'd be willing to let them see mine.
