In late January I ordered a new 13' Scamp layout 2.  When I placed my order I was told there was a 15 month backlog, and mine is scheduled to be ready in late June, 2022.  I know that's a long time to wait, but ordering new is about the only way to be assured of getting a Scamp the way you want it...because used ones are as scarce as "hens teeth".  I was wondering if any of you members know if Scamp may be upping production in the near future to try and get rid of some of the backlog.  Before the virus, I had read that there was about 9 months lead time.  Also, since over a year is a long time to wait, I'm sure some people will end up canceling their order...in which case that would move me up, although I suspect most people will be patient like me and wait it out.  I'll be looking forward to the day when I can drive to Backus, MN to pick it up.

Welcome to the group from Chicago. We waited 9+months last year and found them to be close to target. We did move up about a month in 2019 for our 13 also.  The time to make them is not fast and has cure times for the resins and adhesives and such so not a lot of room to up production  back then.  They are hand built all along the way  and it is worth it for us. but  a year or more is tough.. We actually went to Backus 3 months before we were to  get our trailer and sat in a couple and saw them being built and got to meet and talk to a couple people in the factory so we had a better idea of what we were getting and found a couple little things we had to have when they called to confirm before starting the build   . Congratulations on getting one ordered.

Welcome!

Not surprising that the wait time for your Scamp build is much longer now.  All RV sales were insane this past year!  The dealer near our home in MI sold every last bumper pull on their large lot by mid-summer, and they didn't get new inventory back in until the fall.  MI is a huge camping state in normal times, and last year with all the new campers the UP was jam-packed with campers.  They were camping alongside roads, fire trails etc. as the non-reservable campgrounds were all full.  This summer will be interesting.  I am sure a large percentage of the newbies discovered the joy of camping and will continue on...but I bet there will be quite a few RVs for sale if the state opens up again.  That probably won't translate into more Scamps for sale...Scamp owners are a different breed!  It is frustrating to wait so long, but the relative rarity and unique construction of Scamps also keep their resale value high.  All those cheap, mass-produced RVs that sold out rapidly depreciate in value every year.

Cancellation list

Scamp maintains a cancellation list for buyers who are able to make quick decisions and are flexible about the exact configuration of the trailer. As was explained to me, when they get a cancellation (of a trailer in progress I think), they start calling the list. The first person who says yes gets the trailer. Worth asking about.

i ordered this past June and my delivery was in December. My brother had ordered one in 2018 and his lead time was 9 months. I was surprised that at the height of the pandemic mine was shorter. And now it is 3x my wait. Hard to predict. However with Scamp's generous, no cost cancellation policy up until the trailer starts production, I wonder how many of those current orders are less than fully committed purchasers.

Scamp ordering policy

When I ordered my Scamp in late January, 2021, the salesman took a few hundred dollars off the base price and then all options were discounted 10%.  As far as I know, that is the only "wiggle room" given on the price of a new Scamp.  I had to put down a $500 deposit that is refundable up until they start building the Scamp.  Like the above person mentioned, I also wonder how many people put down a $500 deposit and then later will decide to cancel the order and get the deposit refunded.  In that case, I would think that I would move up the list...and my wait could be shortened by a few weeks.  But then again, maybe most people are like me and will wait it out.  I am not very flexible on how I want my trailer outfitted, so I doubt if I would be interested in taking one that was canceled.  The chances of a canceled order being exactly what I ordered would be about zero.  Another thing I have thought about is since Scamp often adds new options from time to time...I will need to ask when they call to confirm my order...if there are any new options since I placed my order.
