New Owner Buy List

I have a 13' that should be ready any day now. I'm excited. A trailer is a new experience for me. I've always been a tent camper.

To get ready, I've been reading this forum and other sites to make a list of items I should buy and have with me when I go out. I've found several checklists here for things like before you tow - all very helpful! I didn't see any related to this. If I missed one, please point me. Thanks.

I'd appreciate thoughts on my list as well as noting things that are not on the list. Thanks!  Tom

Based on my reading, I'm pretty sure I'll want to have these on hand (a few I've already purchased)
Drinking water rated hose (how long do people find they need? 25' seems to be common)
City water pressure regulator
Water filter
RV toilet paper
50A to 30A adapter (cord or plug?)
Angle sewer hose adapter to hook to sewer lines at some campgrounds.
Several short 2x6 boards for leveling
Sealing toilet bags for cold weather or traveling without water in the tanks
Trailer locks
Small shovel

I see these mentioned - do I need these?

30A extension cord
3” hose supports when doing campsite sewer hookups
Black water tank additives
Surge / low voltage protector for shore power (expensive)

RE Buy List

Hi Tom.  I think the following would be a good idea to have before picking up your Scamp: warm bedding; 50A-30A adapter; 16 or 14 gage power cord for mooching electricity from friends; small electric heater; porta-potty bags; RV toilet paper; drinking water jug; trailer padlock (in case you park and leave it); snow shovel; and stackable plastic leveling squares (Walmart) because they are lighter and more convenient than carrying 2x6 boards.

You can wait on some things: 25 ft RV drinking water hose; blackwater tank additives (note dawn dishwashing detergent works well, too).

I question whether you need the other things on your list soon or ever.

Buy list

Thanks. Great input. I wasn't completely clear. This wasn't a pickup list. I'm actually having it delivered. Rather a getting ready list, things I'll need to have with the trailer. I will look at those plastic square for leveling. I realize having a long heavy gauge extension cord would be good to have here at the house. Obviously I don't have a 30A outlet. But I will need the drinking water hose, right? The water pressure and filter items are inexpensive so I already got them. Can't hurt.
Anyone else want to weigh in?

Thanks!

Tom

Yes and no.
I see these mentioned - do I need these?

30A extension cord  ALMOST NEVER, carry a good 20 amp cord if you like but you may never use it.
3” hose supports when doing campsite sewer hookups ONLY USED FOR PERMANENT HOOKUPS.not day to day dumps
Black water tank additives YES it will keep the smell down
Surge / low voltage protector for shore power (expensive) IF THE BUDGET ALLOWS, a good one will test the wiring of the hookup
And for the water hose, I have a filter and two 25 footers, with one cut at 10' and 15'. Most of the time I use the 10' and have only once used the 2nd 25' I like the white hoses from Walmart, then they never get used for anything else.
Also extra fuses, tire gauge, cheap volt meter ($6 at Harbor freight), stick on levels, we could go on spending your money all night. Just buy it as you can. Remember that the RV will not have a jack or tools to change the spare tire.

Welcome.

A Weber Go Anywhere Grill, charcoal, bbq tools,  2 rocking folding chairs, fire starters, butane lighter, we like to run a 12 volt refrigerator cooler in the truck, and then light the refrigerator when we get to the campsite, Campfire wood, a cross lug wrench, bottle jack, I don't like the stabilizers on the rear bumper,  I bring the aluminum screw type (2). A little note book to keep track of the sites Campgrounds cost etc.  Get your wheels balanced right away if they aren't already.  Trust me on this one.  Do it. Charcoal chimney. Flashlights.  I like the small leds for $2.00 each.  A Coleman lantern and fuel . Small bottle of dish soap.convertible screw driver, pliers and 8 inch adjustable wrench.  I'll think of more

Great list input

Thanks for the great input. I had on a list somewhere to check whether the scissor jack for my car will work doe the trailer. Thanks for the reminder. I've been camping all my life so some of these things I will know to bring. The trailer specific items I don't know.

This is really helpful! Thanks. Tom

test camping

Try camping in your own driveway for a weekend, just try not to run into the house for things.

Plus it's a good test run for all the devices that make up a new RV.

enjoy

scissors

I too use a good auto parts universal scissors jack for the event of a flat. The one in our minivan looked great but the top swivel point that works on the car body immediately flipped over and slid off the trailer frame. Check it out carefully on flat ground but realize that you will never get  a flat on a level parking lot???  also some type of wheel chocks are absolutely necessary. the little light trailer will take any opportunity to roll off your boards or leggo blocks as the tongue jack  will not hold it securely in place.

Enjoy your new Scamp

Jack, wheel chocks - test run

All great input. I'll add wheel chocks to the list and check the jack carefully.

Buying stuff

As you take your first few trips, you will be better able to identify what you need/want.

Yes, after a few trips

Absolutely. I'm not trying to decide everything I'll want, but rather try to have on hand the things that experienced Scamp campers know that I'll probably need. And things I can take a wait and see approach, i.e., not necessarily required.

I've got a good list so far.

Thanks everyone.
