Scamp sink

Hello all!

we are soon to be new scamp 13 owners as we are picking up our 2013 this weekend.  I have a question about the sink.  I assume you try to keep things from going down it besides water.  What about coffee grounds and small peices do food.  Any issues there? How careful do we need to be?

Thanks in advance!

Sink

Whatever goes down it ends up in the gray water tank, if you have one, or in the outside sink drain container. It's best not to put things down the drain.

stray

Congratulations on the new Scamp. The stray coffee ground and particle of food is usually not an issue on ours. We use a strainer to be sure it is minimal. Occasionally a good run of water to flush the drain and tube.  It should flush out when you dumped the gray water.  You should try to have a decent amount of liquid in any waste tank to get a good dump We usually dump the black and fill and dump the toilet 3-4 times to be sure it is empty and reasonably clean and then do the same with the gray with what ever is left in the fresh tank run down th sink.

Thanks

Thanks, Sorry for such a basic question but we are totally new to the RV world.  We will use a strainer to minimize food globuals from going down the drain.

A trick I use

In addition to using a strainer to keep solid stuff out of the gray tank, while driving home, I'll fill the tanks about 1/3 or 1/2 full of water and add a little Tide laundry detergent. The motion of the road is a powerful yet gentle scrubber. When I get home, top off the tanks and dump them again.  Always like that clean fresh feeling, especially in the black tank.  This trick also loosens those sediments like coffee grounds that may have dried in there too.

Gray Tank

I'm careful with stuff going down the sink, but not overboard. It all gets dumped and flushed and if you're flushing tanks regularly there shouldn't be any problem.

A note: while some put treatments in the black tanks, many forget treating the gray tanks. They will develop odors over time and should get some bleach or treatment once and awhile like the black tank but not as often, to keep them odor free.

I'd also be careful over cleaning the black tanks. It is a small septic system which relies on bacteria to break down the waste products. If the black tank is kept "whistling clean" it won't be as effective at doing it's thing. I'll usually just dump, flush about twice a year, and put the chemicals in after each dump with about a gallon of water. Never have a problem with odors and sometimes if black tank hasn't been filled on a trip, I'll let it percolate for a couple of weeks before dumping so it more completley breaks down the TP and solids before dumping.
