mattress for scamp 16-Standard floor plan 6
We picked up our new to us Scamp 16 last fall and we're also looking for a mattress solution. I think we're going to go with something like a 3" or 4" latex topper and just leave the bed set up all the time. In reading many posts on bed size, it seems like there is some variability in measurements being taken. But since we're going to cut ours to fit, we're not going to sweat that too much. Anyway, various owners of the Scamp 16 report a width of 44" or 45" and an length that varies from 74" to 78". We've seen a full size latex topper listed at 53" x 75", so that seems like a good place to start. Many folks suggest using an electric carving knife to trim the topper after carefull scribing the curves and actual width.

FWIW. Southern Mattress in Rocky Mount NC makes custom mattresses for Scamps, Casita and other fiberglass trailers. They make a really comfortable mattress but last I checked they were around $600. They are multi layer foam with a regular house mattress covering.

Magic Sleeper makes a mattress or you can get only the shell and use your own insides (but its still $260!). I did get the shell and used it with the OEM cushions and a 3" foam topper.

Note that memory foam gets pretty hard when cold. Natural latex would be better but more $$$.
Before spending much money you might want to just get a 3 inch thick Queen size foam topper and cut the curves out. It would be used on top of the cushions. They say an electric carving knife works well.. I used a razor with a board on top compressing the foam so I could cut it better.
I sleep very comfortably on the cushions supplied by Scamp! I almost feel I need to apologize for that! I really like being able to use the table during the day. I can sit there and eat, read, do puzzles, etc. I know that most camping places have picnic tables but sometimes it's nice to stay in my cozy little camper. And Walmart parking lots don't have picnic tables if you have to stop there!
I would like to thank everyone for there input, got a lot of good ideas to think about. I've arrived in Backus today and will pick up my camper tomorrow. Tthanks again.
Be safe out there on the roads and enjoy the new Scamp!
