trouble shooting

A loose connection will result in an open circuit much like an open switch. It takes a short or an overload to blow the fuse. Disconnect the wire at the furnace, replace the fuse, test for voltage at the furnace and if OK reconnect the wire. If it blows, the motor in the furnace may be frozen. Some here have taken them apart and oiled them, I have not.

Furnace

The fine folks as Suburban have produced a trouble shooting flow chart and included it in the service manual.  It makes sense to use the flow chart which describes a logical series of steps that should find any problem with the furnace without wasting time on random trial and error, although it will not help you find rare problems like shorts on the circuit board, etc.

blown fuse and loose wire

PS.. pretty sure that red wire is not your problem, but all those wires on the screws should have ring terminals and it does not look like they do.

loose

As stated already a loose wire will not typically cause a fuse to fail. But a jammed motor can. If you unplug the 4 wire connector at the furnace and the fuse does not blow you will have narrowed the short to the furnace.  if it still blows you will be looking for the red wire rubbed thru  or pinched to ground but also unlikely

I hate WASPS!!!

So I was home with a cold and couldn't stay in bed. Instead, I removed the furnace (again) for a closer inspection. As suspected, there were more wasps nests... a lot more. I dismantled the exchanger and found the following:

The nests had prevented the fan from turning. I removed everything and cleaned everything up and re-assembled it. Once I got the wires re-connected and engaged the thermostat it made a bit of a noise then nothing. I suspect the motor may be gone or I've not hooked it up correctly, though I took pictures and well there is only a couple ways one can hook it up... pretty strait forward. Though the blue wires from the furnace that control the T-stat may be switched (I've tried them both ways} with no luck.

The very first time I fired it up It blew a fuse, then the second time is sounded as if the fan tried to engage and then nothing. It hasn't blown a fuse again so maybe the fan motor is gone. Or was going now is gone. My question is this, I have the unit removed. Could I take it to a furnace guy and have them put it on the bench and test the fan, board etc?

Time for a new furnace??

I think each part in that furnace is over $100. If you need to replace both the control board and the motor you are well over $250 with tax and shipping. I think a whole new furnace is about $400, If the budget allows it may be time to cut the losses and replace the whole thing.

Furnace FIXED!

Thanks Everyone,

We just picked up our Scamp 16 from a local RV Service Center (Louisville RV Center). They replaced the motor in the furnace and it is working flawlessly. Of course I paid for the luxury of having someone else fix it, but since we purchased the camper out of state it required an inspection of the gas system and the fire alarm, extinguisher etc... After trying everything in my limited power to fix it... it made sense to turn to a pro. We decided that since the unit had been setting for several years before we purchased it that the inspection and a sign off from someone who actually knew what they were doing would be best. I'm quite capable, but figured why guess. Thanks everyone for your comments and support. I've also covered the vents with those nice covers you guys recommended! Lesson here... keep the wasps out! It will save hundreds in furnace repairs later. I'll be back soon with more questions. Thanks everyone.
