Scamp door question

This has probably been beat to death but has it improved? I’m looking at a new 13’ deluxe but wonder about the old door fit issue. I’ve owned 2 -16’, a 13’ new and a 5th wheel over the last twenty years and only the 5th wheel had a door that didn’t leak somewhere. One of the 16’ even had a factory installed metal brace at the door bottom to make it shut true. Anybody have a current knowledge of the “state of the door”?

2018 door change

In 2018 Scamp changed the door hardware. The door latch was updated to a more modern standard RV latch and the hinges were changed to flat hinges with spacers to align the pivot points. The new hardware is black and easy to spot. Earlier this year some cracking issues were noted with the new hinges. I have not really seen the new door set up, just read a few comments on the new door set up.

Owners of late model Scamps with the new black entry door hardware should do a careful inspection of the hinges, especially the top one, for signs of fatigue or cracking. Now is a good time to do it as trailers are coming out of hibernation, before you’re ready to take that first big trip.

I recently became aware of a number of failures posted in the Facebook groups, including one in which the top hinge broke completely and the door fell off while towing. The trailer was less than a year old. A number of people have posted pictures of their cracked hinges, and I have become convinced this is not an isolated problem.

For now Scamp seems to be mailing replacement hinges to affected owners, but I think there may be a design flaw. One owner posted his observation that the hinge pins are not aligned due to the door and shell curvature, which puts a twisting stress on the hinge body every time the door is opened and closed, leading to metal fatigue and cracking. The old ball-type hinges are more forgiving of alignment variations.

Hopefully someone who owns a newer trailer will post  their experience on the new door set up. Scamp's website has not been updated showing the new door.

Ok so far

We took delivery of a 2019 in june and so far so good. on the door. The hinges are a bit stiff and the latch works well but is also a bit stiff . I can see a tiny bit of light at the front of the bottom edge from inside looking thru the seal area but we have not found water inside so far. We like our  13 with bath. so far. Although all of my other RV's have leaked somewhere if it rained hard enough or long enough So Time will tell

New black hinges failed

We just had to break off our trip because the entry door of our Scamp 13 came off.

We took delivery of our Scamp 13 in Dec 2018, and have been out maybe 4 times since then.  We were on a trip yesterday and stopped at a WalMart.  We went to put some things in the trailer when the door fell off!  Both hinges failed!

Because the door came off in a parking lot, it is still intact.  We covered the opening with plastic sheeting, cut our trip short, and limped home.

We are very disappointed we couldn't continue our trip (hard to get reservations now) and have to now to make repairs.  We are thankful, however, this didn't occur as we were driving down the interstate.  Who knows how many accidents and injuries - even deaths - might have been caused?

Just emailed Scamp today, asking for replacement hinges; any needed mounting hardware; instructions for mounting the door; and a tracking number.

Replacement Hinges - arriving today

Happy to report that Scamp sent replacement hinges and hardware via 2nd-day, and at no charge.  From their website, the replacement black hinges seem a little different - a rounded surface, instead of the flat or rectangular that came with the trailer.

Can anyone recommend how to hold the entry door in place while re-hanging it?  I'm thinking put hinges on door, support the door somehow (with wood blocks?), and fit hinges to bolts on trailer body.  Hoping the bolts are fixed in place, and I don't have to peel away the rat fur to hold and keep them from turning.

Has anyone replaced the nuts with nylon lock nuts?

The door fit has been fine - at least, until it came off!  laugh
