13 Scamp Allure Plank Floor

The new to us Scamp 13 had pretty new indoor outdoor carpeting.  I took it on a shake down campout and having carpeting vs the vinyl plank flooring did not work for me. AZ is a very dusty environment and you can't sweep the carpeting with a broom like the plank flooring. I don't want to add a vacuum to my gear so when I returned home I started removing the carpeting and putting in the Allure Vinyl Plank flooring.

Before:

After Demo, removed the benches.  Darn, they glued the carpeting!  frown

A bit of scraping the floor starts going down

Time to this point including demo 1 hr.  Cost $0 leftover plank from other trailer. I will need to order one case @ $53 to complete the Scamp.

Ran out of flooring 1 piece short of finishing upper deck. sad  Have to wait for my new case to arrive to finish.

While the benches are removed I'll put down my new 12V wiring block and bring power to the passenger side for Shurflo pump, porch light and reading light on closet.  I'll also pull a 14-2 romex to the passenger side from the panel for outlets in the benches, possible external outlet and microwave in the closet bottom.  I'll post those projects separately.

Allure Floor Part 2

Riser is complete now completing the main floor and entry.

Let the carpet tearout begin

After scraping the carpet glue, place the homerow

Coming across, this is the easy part

and now the entryway

Almost finished

The flooring is almost complete.  Only thing remaining is to shoot the oak 3/4 round for trim and screw down the aluminum riser trim.

Plank flooring

It looks so very nice. You make it look so easy.  Why did you choose plank flooring versus "stick down"?

It is Easy

Sandra,

Probably the easiest flooring product I've ever installed. To cut you just use a straight edge and a razor cutter, score a line across the plank and snap it. I use tin snips to cut the rounded portions or you could use a heavy duty pair of scissors.

I stick with this product because after you have installed this and gone camping it is so durable and so easy to sweep the camper out when needed. Plus it looks like a million bucks in these trailers. If you ever need to replace it, the floating floor comes right out, no sticky mess to have to scrape up.

laminate

I have an Armstrong laminate but it says no glue required. Would this be okay in the scamp?

Laminate

Just me personally, I stay away from laminate flooring in trailers. The biggest enemy of laminate flooring and/or wood plank flooring is water and that is a rather common occurrence in a trailer environment. Plumbing leaks, spills, etc are happen quite a bit and can destroy those types of floors even if you get it cleaned up rather quickly. Laminate flooring probably wouldn't be good for dog owners either. Their nails could make quick work of a laminate floor, I don't think the Allure would have any issues with that. Certain laminate floors also require the addition of an underlayment, Allure flooring has the underlayment built in and will float old vinyl flooring, or wood sub floor.

The Allure vinyl plank flooring is impervious to most anything, yet still has the same look as laminate planks. Joe Z on this site took a piece and immersed it in a bucket of water for several days and it was still perfect. This stuff not only looks great, it's simple to install and cut, and it holds up to trailer life which is why I've done all my trailers the last 10+ years with Allure flooring. I believe Home Depot is one of the few vendors for it, but there are some similar vinyl plank flooring products at other lumber outlets.

I noticed some people leave

I noticed some people leave the benches in and just butt the flooring up to it. What are the pros and cons?

I just replaced the subfloor on the dinette area and wondering if I should install flooring now or after the benches are back in.

Does the height of the flooring create any issues when screwing the benches to the supports on the exterior walls?

Flooring

You could do either, Rick and have seen it done both ways. I always prefer to run my new flooring wall to wall so it is in the under bench storage areas, etc. Its easy to lift the benches enough to run full flooring and if the benches are out I would definitely run it wall to wall.

Always have used vinyl plank flooring and never any issues putting the benches back in.

We pulled our carpet out of

We pulled our carpet out of the main floor and installed Allure vinyl planks about three years ago. So glad we did it before our Alaska trip, as our ice tea jug overturned in the fridge on one of the bumpy roads and the contents spilled onto the floor when I opened the fridge and discovered the overturned jug.

That would have been quite a mess to clean up in the middle of the Yukon!

We did leave the dinette area carpeted, since we put our clothes boxes under the table (which is a permanent bed for us) and the carpeting helps keep them from sliding forward when braking.

A length question.

We are potentially buying an older 5th wheel.  We will have to have it put on a trailer and moved to our home, as local welders don't want to raise the trailer.  Can anyone tell me the distance between the centerline of the wheels and the "foot" of the front lifting mechanism?

wiring and plumbing

I'm planning on putting down vinyl planks on our new/old Scamp. The wiring and plumbing currently run along where the floor meets the wall and are covered by the upturned carpet edge. How do you cover these when the vinyl floor is down?
