Newbie Scamp Owners taking first trip to Colorado with 2 dogs - where should we camp?

Hello! First of all, my wife and I are complete rookies. We have only taken our, new to us ,'87 scamp, "Peg," out 1 time before winter.  We are planning lots of local trips in the spring to get us ready for our big summer trip to Colorado.  We are planning to spend 3 days near Estes Park, so we can do some hiking and go to the Stanley Hotel for a day. Then we are headed to Garden of the Gods for 3 days.  We would like to not stay at RV parks on this trip, so I am asking you all for location suggestions that are dog friendly in National Parks and National Forests.  Any and all advice would be very appreciated.  Thank you SOI community!

Camping with dogs

Camping with dogs requires  a bit more advance planning than human-only trips.  National park rules vary, but most have some restrictions as to where you can go with your dogs on trails, etc.  We have had pretty good luck with private campgrounds found online (not the KOA big rig community type!).  All campgrounds stipulate that you can't leave your dogs in the RV unattended.  We take our dogs along on side trips, and leave the truck locked with A/C on for an hour or so if we want to go out to eat, shopping, etc.  Our truck is "their" vehicle and they are very relaxed with being left in there.  Our collie just goes nuts when we are preparing to go camping.  Every time he hears the truck start up he is worried that we might leave without him!  Good luck, and have fun researching and planning your camping trips!

I have never had a problem

I have never had a problem leaving my dogs in the scamp. I run the AC turn on the radio and they sleep. I take them for a good walk before and as long as no one messes with the camper they are nice and peaceful. They are laid back by nature Lab and a coonhound and when they aren't with me I'm usually only gone for an hour or 2. If I go kayaking maybe 4. I could take them with, but the Lab loves the water just a little too much. Much to the dismay of the coonhound.

Dog friendly National parks.

Just an FYI, national parks allow you to have your dogs with you. You are NOT allowed to have them on hiking trails. There may be a handful of exceptions, but don't count on it. We live in Colorado and I know you'll have a great time while you're here. Enjoy your trip !!
