Living in Our Scamp - Initial Thoughts

Hi - we've been living full-time in our Scamp 13 for a month now (and having a great time exploring the States). I've done a post on our blog about our initial thoughts on Scamper living. If you're interested, you can check it out here.

Cheers - Ellen

Living in your Scamp

loved the read friend. Just love reading about ones experience in their beloved Scamp. We purchased our 16 ft. Scamp last fall and just love it. My wife just made all new curtains for it, and I got,to pick out the material! Will post pics soon. We plan some weeks of vacation, but I could not get my bride to chuck everything and live in our Scamp! Keep posting your experiences as I love to eras them. Enjoy!

Completely Understand

We understand.  We full-timed in a 24' stick trailer for 2 years, 2 adults, 1 teen and a big dog.  People will say it can't be done but, we did it.  It was nice.  Very nice versus the house, the yard, the property taxes, the crappy weather and inability to just decide to leave without the intervention of a realtor and an eager buyer.  We also tented to begin with, had everything from the pop-ups without the inside shower (exhausting at the day's end waiting your turn, checking, waiting for a shower), smelling all the good foods cooking and checking our ice chest to see what was floating on top that we might eat and the price of ice on a long vacation but a fridge/toilet/shower/comfortable bed?  An introduction to what heaven will be like.  Roughing it isn't bad when you are 30 though but at 60, ah, well, life can be rough enough.  The younger couple that lives next to us with a little boy thinks the pop-up is just "all that and a bag of chips".  I remember those days.

There are a couple of single women that are full-timing in Casitas and have very interesting blogs.  One is retired and the other workcamps.  A lot of people are using the fiberglass molded to snowbird and some to full-time, some give up everything or store things and other keep the homes either renting or just closing them up for awhile.

OK, I am SO ready to get the house on the market and pursue adventure.

And, great blog!  Sounds like such fun!

Love it

We've known personally two Scamp 13 Full-timers, one couple Dave & Leslie, were featured in the Spring Edition last year of the SOI News.

Bob and Bev also SOI Members are what is known as Full-Part Timers in their Scamp 13 since they still maintain their base, but are living in the 13 Scamp at least half of the year. Those of you that attended Scamp Camp SW in December got to meet Bob and Bev.

Can't wait to hear more of your adventures, Ellen.  I've also featured your blog on our Travel Blog pages as well.

Thanks!

Thanks for the nice feedback everyone!

Greg A - I really appreciate you adding us to the travel blog page!

Doug - would love to see the pictures of what your wife has done to your Scamp. The curtains the Scamp came are pretty boring. Definitely something I would like to change one day.

Cathy, Alfred & Andrew - would you be able to share the names of the blogs of the Casita folks? Would be interested in checking them out. And totally agree with you about roughing it when you get older not being such a great thing. Middle age and tents don't always go together :-)

Blogspots

Here are the blogspots for the Casita owners that are full-timing:  http://www.interstellarorchard.com/ and http://rvsueandcrew.net/

The last time we stayed in a tent, a surprise cold front came in and the temps were in the low 40's with a wind.  We also tented on Disney World's when the temps dropped in the 40's and they had torrential rains and, of course, the tent sprung a leak.  Our lucky dog at the time was at the DW kennel, climate-controlled but I know she would rather have been in the cold and rain with us.  Now, with the pop-up and no inside shower, something has to give.

Posted the pics of the new

Posted the pics of the new curtains. Yes, the color of the origianl curtains are truly boring! However, they are made from very good material. We used the original curtains as liners, and sewed on top of them. This way, the view outside is the same boring color tan, but inside is the  stunning blue we chose! Now in production are the new cushion covers, a huge task, but will be ready for the upcoming towing season!

13' living?

After selling the first 13' because it was lacking some amenities that I realized that I wanted/needed, I'm still trying to decide between a 16' layout #4 or a 13' with toilet as replacement. Can I ask what if any interior modifications you made to be able to live for extended periods in a 13'? As a northerner, we can't always count on cooking and eating outside. One idea that I've picked up from other sites is to take out the table, use a board (15" seems to be the right size) to make a U-shaped seating area and then add other boards for a one-person or two-person bed. That would give me some SPACE when I needed to be inside because of weather. I do prefer the idea of pulling a 13'. Any other suggestions?

Still Searching

We are still in the searching phase for the right trailer and the tow vehicle.   We have a pop-up but can't get out because of my husband's work schedule, impossible employer.   House has to go on the market this spring before we can have much of an adventure so we'll be following you all.  Those blogs I posted are quite good.  I don't read them all of the time.  RV Sue has SO much info on her blog about just everything full-timing.

Although not full-time, some good info: http://justfinding.blogspot.com/p/scamp-19.html  They have a Scamp 5th wheel and that is mainly what we are looking at right now.  They have done some neat mods.
