Anybody towing with a Ford Lightning EV?

Does anyone tow their Scamp with a Lightning?
Would you be willing to share your efficiency numbers in miles/kWh?
Up elevation? Down elevation? Cold weather? Warm Weather? Batteries plugged in? Not Plugged in?

Ford Lightning

Hope someone is, cause I'd love to see their answers. The EV truck mfgrs, only seem to give towing capacity and never speak about range when towing......

i have looked into the Tesla

i have looked into the Tesla Model Y.  Basically it gets 400 miles and tows 3500 pounds, so it would work fine for a scamp 13 or 16.  Everything i've read/watched on this says half the value and that's what you will get.  So 200 miles.  I'd round down to be safe at 180 miles.  That's 3 hours drive time which is about what we do before we stop for bathroom/gas/break.  You just need to plan your trip around charging stations and make sure that 3 hour limit ends with a station.

 

i'm not in the market now to do the switch but will hopefully in the next few years.  i would love to hear more about EV owners with Scamps

I tried to rent one in my area (Texas), but was unable to find one that was available for rent. (I already own the Lightning). So, instead, I rented a "Sunray" Model 109, which is very similar weight to a Scamp ........a little bit smaller, actually.

I towed it in Winter (right now) when it was 40 degrees outside and the aerodyamics of this thing are MUCH worse than a Scamp. I was able to get 1.4 mi/kWh fully loaded with my wife and kids in the truck towing it.

I am suspecting I would get a similar efficiency with the 13 foot scamp, but I would really like to see someone put it to the test.

So, I took the plunge! I

So, I took the plunge! I managed to find a used 2018 Scamp 13-foot. And it has been the BEST compliment to go with my electric truck. I did a 600 mile trip in both directions from Texas to go skiing in New Mexico with an elevation change of 8000 feet into New Mexico. On the way there,  we had a family of 4 and a fully loaded truck bed and fully loaded Scamp with camping supplies and we ended up with an efficiency rating of 1.1 miles/kWh. The temperature was about 30-40 degrees outside. On the way back (descending in elevation), we averaged 1.4 miles/kWh. This is absolutely fantastic and just within a very comfortable range to get to the next charging station. The longest trip between charging stations we had was 106 miles, and we could easily do 120-130 miles on a single charge while pulling the Scamp. It really has been a blast, and now that the Tesla supercharger network has JUST opened up for Ford Lightnings, we should be able to take it all over the country. Woo hoo!

Towing with an EV

Excited to hear and learn more from those towing with an EV!  We just returned from a short jaunt with our 16' standard Scamp in Minnesota using a Rivian R1T.  Temps were in the 30s after an early week snowstorm and we averaged 1.67 mi/kWh (4 people in truck).  Elevation change was fairly minimal compared with what I can assume those out west experience, but took a route home following the Mississippi River Valley bordering WI and MN. This provided a good exposure to hills and descents.  Regenerative braking on the descents helps to offset those uphils!  We did switch between charging the truck and the scamp using the 30 amp hook-up (set truck to draw 24 amp) and this gave about 4-5 mi/hr.  Not super quick, but if we needed to for a night, adds up.  Hesitant to plug in truck into 30 amp, and Scamp into 15 amp outlet as we didn't have a surge protector for the 15 amp hookup.  Interested to know if many people without AC find that 15 amp outlet serves them just as well as 30 amp, or if there are other considerations I am not aware of.

Ford PowerBoost Hybrid

I tow a 19ft 5th wheel with my Ford F150 hybrid. The really fun part is that I can plug the Scamp into the truck 20amp receptacle in the bed and run the a/c! I no longer have to carry 2 Honda 2000 generators to boon dock, the truck runs the Scamp just fine. The truck has a generator mode that will start truck to charge the lithium battery when is discharged from running the Scamp, after charging the battery the truck turns off. My wife is thrilled since she was unable to pull start the Hondas without yanking her arm off. I do not believe that I can run both a/c and microwave on a single 20 amp circuit.
