Hi - recently went for our first outing this season, and when connected to city water, our freshwater tank filled up and overflowed. My reading has led me to the conclusion that a check valve on our water pump has failed, and we might need a new pump. The pump, btw, works when we disconnected city water.
Any wisdom, please?

You are correct. The check valve is freezing in the open position on the pump and will cause the fresh tank to overflow.
The pump will work as normal off city water.
I currently have the same situation on a 5 year old pump and am replacing it. You can sometimes open up the pump head and repair, but never found it lasts long. Easier for $59 to just get a new pump.

Mine failed the first summer. I just added a check valve in the line. (You may also rebuild the pumps)
The left picture is the check valve, right is an accumulator to stop the pump from short cycling.
