Hi Gang:
Well Mary just got back from our first official Scamp sojourn from Connecticut to San Francisco and back!
Almost exactly 7000 miles logged in the RAV4 towing our old 1977 Scamp 13'. We had a wonderful time, despite some snickering at the KOA's about our rig from the big boys. But, no matter where we went folks were always interested in the "marshmallow on wheels." It was an eye-opening experience as I was always amazed how many folks have literally sold their homes and taken their lives on the road.
Will try to share experiences as time goes on, but have to say saw about 4 Casita's on the road and not one Scamp 13' all along i80, although we did see one Scamp 19' in Wyoming! As for our old 13'...new windows are in order and perhaps a lift kit...we are barely 8" off the ground. LOL! Plus, still have to fully sort ALL our electrical. Right now we ran it with three different electrical systems: RAV4 to tail and running lights, battery to run the vanity stuff and fan in the Scamp overnight, shore hook-up to run the fridge and 120v receptables. I know, I know...have to get that inverter and solar panel sorted. :) No matter what, we were not off-grid and all got sorted well.
If I can make one suggestion to all our fellow travelers: Mt. Lassen National Park in Mineral, CA (lower Cascades) is (imho) the greatest un-tapped and under used National Park in America. As a matter of fact it's the least visited park in the USA because it's only open 4 months a year, tops. The place is glorious, spit clean, and almost always empty. Those of you who've been there know what I'm talking about! As for Mineral, (population 123), we saw only 3 people; a dour old gent who runs the rv park and the general store, his son who cooks at the Mineral Lodge and his wife who is the waitress. The food was excellent and the conversation spirited. I loved it. The park is extraordinary especially the King's Creek section which is like Heaven on Earth. On the practical side, Mineral is at least 30 miles (each way) from any gasoline.
In closing today I want to thank the many folks here on the site who helped me with questions that I had prepping our Scamp. I could not have done it without y'all!
Best as always, Guy
Congratulations! We also just purchased a 13' Scamp and completed a short maiden voyage Labor Day weekend. We have visited Mt. Lassen a few times on our motorcycles and agree it's a beautiful, fabulous and quiet park. We discovered it by accident, like you, but have now returned several times. As sport-touring motorcycle riders, Lassen has great beauty and fantastic twisty roads :)
Bravo on your trip jumpugly. I have a Scamp 13, but haven't taken it nearly the distance you have.
Not wanting to be pedantic, but for accuracy there is no "Mount Lassen". It is correctly called Lassen Peak, and the park is Lassen Volcanic National Park.
I live about 50 miles from the park and have been there many many times, as far as the 1960s. It is an amazing place. Lassen Peak is an active volcano, and was the last volcano to erupt in California, in 1915. You can find photos of the eruption online. There are sulfur pits where I've walked within inches of boiling mud pots.
For those planning a trip to the area, Mount Shasta (14,000 feet) is about 75 miles north of Redding, Burney Falls is about 68 miles northwest of Redding (about 40 miles north of Lassen Park). All are great places to visit.
