What is a title? when it comes to travel trailers

Hi Scampers,

When buying a used trailer, what is a clear title? Title, is it from the DMV title like a car? Is that an owners title showing there is no Bank lean on the trailer?

Five years ago I bought a scooter here in RI. It was a 35 year old classic. The RI DMV would never let me register it, because the owner before me lived in CT where you don't need to register a scooter (I said to the lady "there MUST be some way" , she replayed, NO,) You would think all the States would work the same. they don't!

Do travel trailers need to be registered in all states? They do here.  I'm being careful.

What is needed to get a Forester SE 2.5 ready to tow?

Hello Scampers,

Your information would really help and be appreciated. We want to do everything correctly.

Before we find a Scamp 13' to tow with Forester SE 2.5. What do we need to do to get the Forester ready to tow? I was wondering about what kind of break connections and what kind of back light plug connections. Is there anything else we would need, or need to know?  From what I've read on SOI posts, most of you don't use sway bars, is that correct?

Thank you,

Lis

We have a 2004 Forester and

We have a 2004 Forester and to comply with the towing weight limits we need electric brakes on the Scamp.  This means we also need a brake controller installed in the Forester.  I have attached the info from Scamp on what is needed.

In KS, you do not need to

In KS, you do not need to register a trailer under 2,000 lbs.  Our pop-up is under but we registered it and therefore got a title but otherwise we would not have a title.  They still make us pay an enormous personal property tax every year but we don't have to buy a tag since it is under 2,000 lbs.

Yes, the trailer title looks just like the auto/truck titles at least where we have had one:  AZ, KS & AL.

I am not sure that you are aware that they (bad guys) run a lot of scams on the molded fiberglass trailers so anything unrealistically low, "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably isn't." beware of.  If you watch Fiberglass RVs 4-sale, the website that I think you posted on, they list any scams there when they become aware of them.  Sometimes, if I am bored, I go through Craiglist and flag/report the ones that look like scams as I just don't like deceitfulness.  Red flags like "not in their possession but stored somewhere" and for some odd reason, the prices when too low looks like "$3,100", seems it is often between $2,000 and $4,000.  If you have been looking at any ads, you probably already see the "patterns".

So I would not be able to

So I would not be able to bring a trailer home from one of those states AZ, KS, AL, (which I wouldn't do anyway. I won't buy it sight unseen) If the previous owners didn't reg. the trailer then I won't be able to here.

If the seller don't owe the bank money they will have a title???

Thanks Cathy, I'll be very aware. I thought the list I put my ad in is SOI members only. Good to know. I'll have to be even more careful.

Thanks again, Cathy.

Titles

We live in Nevada and we have to have a title on anything ,doesnt matter the weight.Which I think is a safe thing. When we lived in Ks,you didnt have to have a title on under 2000 pds,but how do you know that what you are buying is actually the persons that you are buying from? I think having a title is the safe way to go

Launey and Earlene, I think

Launey and Earlene, I think titles are a good thing, toosmiley

But is it like a car, here in RI you don't need a title if the car is older 2000 (i think) or older. You need a bill of sale and a copy of the previous registration.

Thanks, Lis

Get Info From DMV?

DMV is probably your best source and all states should be online:  http://www.dmv.ri.gov/registrations/

titles

Yes Lis here in Nv camper titles are exactly the same as cars and it doesnt matter how old anything is,it still needs to be titled.I think Snow Gypsy is correct in saying that the dmv would be the place to check it out in your state..When you buy new like we did,you get an oringinal bill of sale to take to your dmv and then they issue a state title

Here is what the DMV worker said. Thank you,

Thank you Cathy, Bob, Launey & Earlene for your input.

The DMV worker said, If the trailer is under 2,000lbs. carryings weight I don't need a title, just a bill of sale by the owner. And, the seller's previous registration for the trailer. If it is from a state that does not require a reg the srller need to get a letter with that state's DMV letterhead on it stating that...Good to know all this in advance.

I asked her if that would have applied to the Scooter when I bought it, she said yes!
