Hi Scampers! I don't have a tow vehicle yet but my family has a 2005 Scion XA they are trying to get rid of. That said, it's not recommended for towing, yet there are companies that make and install tow hitches for it. It would certainly save me a bunch of money. Has anyone had experience towing with that car or similar?

Scion XA for towing
What you can Tow with your Scion is governed by how it was built and how much weight it can SAFELY Tow.
Check your Owners Manual, or with your Dealer, for the Towing Capacity for YOUR SPECIFIC Vehicle.
A cursory search of the Internet indicated that the Scion is NOT Rated to tow Anything (no Towing Capacity was listed in any Vehicle Specs I looked at).
Simply put, the Scion is built on a car's chassis and it is probably maxed out just carrying it's own weight.
You are right in that the Scion will probably not be able to pull the Scamp.

No, towing with an inadequate vehicle will NOT save you money. In fact, it will cost you more, perhaps a lot more, than using a proper vehicle.
See the "expert" reply to this question here, where he states that:
I could not find any confirmed towing capacity for the vehicle. I also contacted Scion by phone and was advised that the xA is not recommended by Scion for towing any trailer of any weight.
I was originally going to buy a new Kia Soul, but I decided against it after I could not find any documentation stating the specific tow weight.
I decided on a Jeep Renegade Trailhawk instead. I figure if I have any issues, I can use the "but you said" defense with Jeep.
