Scamp 19 Axle Failure Question

Jon in Arizona over in the Fiberglass RV group responded to my introduction with a warning about the axle issues with the 19's and some 16's.

He suggested I post some pictures of my axle and mounts for evaluation by some of the wiser members with this issue.

So here they are.   Does anyone have an comments because from what I can tell I look OK.

Sorry it is flipped I can seem to correct that

Axle issues 19's

Arthur,

There was an axle issue back about 2005 that involved the Al-Ko axles which weren't used on all Scamps. First you need to see if you can identify if you have an Al-Ko axle. From your pictures, I can't see that you have any of the damage that was causing the problems. The brackets were cracking and/or tearing and it is usually on the ones where the bracket is reversed from the way yours is. While I can't inspect them in person or up close, I don't see any evidence or any issues, however, I would highly recommend calling Scamp Trailers and discussing this issue with them. If I recall they did take some corrective action for the Scamps that were affected, but they can answer that for you.

Axle mounting

Arthur

You have an ALKO axle (Three sided tube.) (Dexter 4 sided tube). Your trailer need to have supports added above open area of the perch. People use 1x1 square stock or square tube. Scamp at one time was paying for the Mods to fix the problem if they installed the lift block. Take the tire off and check for cracking around the welds on the perch. You may want to consider replacing the axle assy. because of age and adding bolt on brackets at this time. Scamp will give you details for the repair.

Another Axle Note

If you decide to use your current axle and just add blocking you need to grind the current outside welds (tire side) welds off. If you do not and later need to replace your axle those hidden welds will really make it hard to remove your current axle.

Resolved with Scamp

Keith at Scamp has agreed to cover the cost of the work to secure the axle.

There is not distortion of cracks in the mounts so it should work out quite well

Thanks everyone

Excellent News

Arthur,

It is good to hear that Scamp Trailers is still willing to cover this issue when one pops up. They were the best place to start on this one, and glad it is all going to be a good resolution for you.
