Say Hello to My New Tow Vehicle - Getting Her Ready

I just signed the paperwork on my 2016 Jeep Renegade today. She will be here on Wednesday, as they are delivering her to Atlanta from North Carolina.

I just had to have orange, as I am planning to paint the lower half of my Scamp to match. laugh

The Renegade is rated to tow 2,000 pounds, and my Scamp will be 13'. I opted for the 4x4 Trailhawk edition, 2.4L, 180hp. Should I have any towing concerns?

Tow Package

Does it come with a tow package?  It really helps if all your towing equipment is factory installed. I will also help out later if you have warranty issues. 2K towing is cutting it pretty close and rules out moving up to a larger trailer at a later date. I would recommend a towing capacity of 3.5K as a minimum and that may not be enough with a C-17 with tongue weights of around 450 lbs. The other thing to consider with the Jeep is tongue weight rating. Dual tanks on a S-13 the TW is about 250 lbs. On an Outback with 2.7K tow rating the TW limit  is only 200 lbs. You need to do your own research buying a TV vehicle that just meets the minimum requirements. You are better off now with no tow vehicle than you may be a year down the road when you decide to move up in trailer size and your current vehicle will not handle the load. Think out your purchase for the long run.

Thanks for the input.

Yes... it is factory equipped with the tow package.

I adopted a minimalist lifestyle some time ago, so part of my adventure is to see how simply I will live. So... part of the experience is keeping my stuff to a minimum. Having a 13 footer will force me to keep on track. wink

Sweet Looking Jeep

That will look great pulling a 13 Scamp. Eddie brings up some very good points wth being marginal on towing. Our 81 13 Scamp loaded for a month on the road weighed out on the scales at 1900lbs. Depending on the options you get on the new Scamp 13 you are going to be right at the limits and will have to be careful loading. It does as Eddie points out, end you moving up to a 16 or larger trailer. I've known a couple of folks that full-timed in a 13 and made it for a few years, but one ultimately moved up to a 16 in order to continue. Myself, if there is still time to change the tow vehicle, I'd get something beefier. If not, love the one you're with and we'll be following your adventures closely.

Congrats on the new Scamp order and the tow!!

Yes... I think it will look great... especially if I get the Scamp's lower have to match the paint color of the Jeep.

Do you full time it, Greg?

Full Time

Kevin,

Love the tiny house movement, which these trailers are really a part of. Can't wait to see you hit the road in your new rig. We'll be full/pt in 4 and half years.

I'm assuming you will be documenting your adventures in the blog? May we add it to our travel resources section for people to follow??

The key is, as you have said,

The key is, as you have said, "keeping my stuff to a mimimum."  And that includes the stuff you put not only into the SCAMP, but also in the Jeep.

Absolutely.

I have my life and possessions pretty simple at this point.

I am looking forward to taking it to the next level.

I believe the factory

I believe the factory installed hitch on the Renegade is a class 1 ..I could be wrong. And I'm not even sure if that matters.

Knowledgeable people here will be able to assess better :)

Yup.

I believe you are correct, as she can tow 2,000 pounds.
