Printing Entire Member Directory

Hi Lyndon,

At the current time we don't have plans to program for printing the entire member directory for several reasons:

  1. To protect Members privacy we only display limited information in the Member Directory and the only contact method is through the private messaging system online on their member profile or at the end of their listing in the member directory.  If someone wants to provide an email or phone # to someone after they reach them by PM then that can be their decision.  We did make the member directory sortable by state if an event organizer wants to send an event notice to Members in the area of the event, and the PM system will allow loading multiple user names in a notice. It also allows a member to block PM's from Members or shut off their PM if they don't want contacts.
  2. The club is growing pretty fast and we are projecting to possibly hit 1000 members in 2014.  That would become too large to be printing.  We're almost at 400 Members now and that would be pretty unwieldy to print.

Member list hard copy

Yes, one of the first things I noticed with the change in SOI was that we no longer get a list of the members which we can print out as a hard copy.  We've always had one.

Greg, the info that you provide in the member directory actually has less than we've had in the past.  We used to have it all; addresses, phone numbers, email addresses etc., so what you provide in the membership section is much less personal data, so what's the big deal in being able to print it out??

Printing Member List

Hi Joy,

I know you had quite a bit more member information dissiminated in the past, but modern day privacy issues really preclude having most of that type of information displayed or dissiminated.  We no longer collect telephone #'s, or address information for our members, only city, state which is what is most useful.  We do have email, but it is not a best practice to display or dissiminate email addresses for a large and growing online club.

Rather than publishing phone numbers and email addresses, the way the new member directory works is that you can contact any member, but you do so through the private messaging system.  This allows members to communicate but also protects privacy concerns.  If through that private messaging system any members choose to send their phone, email and address information to whomever contacted them that is there decision. And to contact people regionally for gatherings, one can sort by state and add multiple PM's to a single private message for those that are close by.

As far as printing the entire list we probably can find a way to make it happen programmatically if enough members chime in here and want it, but I'm not sure that it is a practical thing to print 500 and soon 1000+ members with no ability to do much of anything with that list in printed form since the only way to contact is via online messaging system.

In the past, SOI has been a very small, intimate owner's club, and we're trying to keep an element of that intimate club with the dual membership option; Lifetime vs Basic but still allow for growth with the free basic membership similar to the other owners online forums. Internet based forums such as the Casita Forum show in excess of 12,000 members and Scamp is historically, probably the largest production brand of molded fiberglass travel trailers. I don't know that anyone would want to print out Casita Forums entire member list. (shows @607 pages) We're trying to build out the functionality of the SOI website, keeping the future in mind with more quickly sortable features in our member directory/event calendars than other forums to make it easier to use for our members.
