Microwave or no microwave that is the question...

Our 16 Scamp came with the microwave but I really dont see a need to have one and would rather use the space for storage.  Any thoughts on if you use one or would like to have one and why?

It would be nice

to have a microwave so you could melt your ice-cream enough to scoop it from the container but I digress.

But for camping it might be a wee bit overkill for some.

I have foregone the MW in favor of more space for other items and the joys of cooking bacon in the skillet and the joys of grease fires and/or igniting the curtains.

Not really.

But then I think of that quick plate of nachos and I regret my decision.

So you can most obviously declare me on the fence concerning the microwave.

We don't have a microwave in

We don't have a microwave in the house and haven't for years.  The one thing I find handy is a pan with a steamer basket which I use to reheat things if needed.  I prefer a hot pot for water and making coffee with the coffee press.  We do mainly one dish meals.  We only used the microwave to reheat leftovers.  A small toaster oven is nice, less weight and smaller than a microwave and you can take it along or just leave it home.  I am now attempting to use a simple larger rice cooker to meet nearly all of our cooking needs and it is working well.  I figure if I master this, it will work out great in the camper.  We have a pop-up but are looking for small TT/5th wheel.

Going without...for now

We camped without it this past weekend and have the next 2 campouts set so we will try camping without it then also.  I guess if we want nachos I'll have to Google the closest Mexican restaurant lol.

Microwave or no...

We never had one in our pop up.  We tried it in our scamp 13. Yup, very handy.  Coffee, coffee cake, popcorn, thawing bacon, etc. ps, the little ones will store under the bed (table). Have fun, Bobbi Lane

Don't need Microwave for Nachos!

Campfire Nachos - No microwave needed.

We've recently gone to an old revere ware type coffee pot, with the glass dealie on the lid. The coffee is so much better than the drip coffee makers or reheating old or instant coffee in a micro. Nice in the winter, first one up puts the coffee pot on the stove and in 15-20 minutes, best coffee ever and trailer is heated. yes I wish I hadn't thrown away my Mom's old authentic Revere Ware coffee pot.

Snow Gypsy's coffee press very similar idea and the coffee in the presses is usually top flight.

I like the campfire

nachos idea but there is a burn-ban in my part of the country.

Maybe in the late fall I can try it. If it rains enough.

In the meantime I will use my itty bitty MW for snacks..

microwave

For me, the need for a microwave comes down to how long I will be camping.  If it is just a short weekend excursion - up to five or so days, I seem to be fine with no microwave.  But if we are traveling for over week - up to a month or so, it is really important for me to have the microwave.  And certainly when we retire and really ramp up the travel time, I want that microwave!  The convenience it adds is far more valuable to me than the "space" that would be gained in the trailer if I did not have it.  Just my two cents' worth!   smiley

Microwaves in scamps

Yes, we shopped at a local Wal Mart and Target and found microwaves for $50.00! We chose the smalles one, and will come in handy for baked potatoes too! she got the cloth bag at a craft show to bake them in the micro wave. We shall store it under the bed when not needed, but will come in handy for much more!

Thermos Coffee Press

We use the Thermos Coffee Press, it isn't large and keeps the coffee warm for a reallly long time.
