I just want to tow a 13' !!!

I was all set on getting the Ford Escape 2.0 EcoBoost with class 11 tow pkg.

Rated at 3500 lbs. ..

Now I'm told that the Escape has a 30sq  Frontal Area Limitation.

Please, people ...I can't keep-up !!

I just want to tow a 13' with the smallest (length wise) TV I can find...

I have limited parking and would rather not to pay to store ..Which in my area is about 200.00 a month....

Ford Escape 30sq Frontal Area Limit

I"ve never heard of that limit until now.It would have gotten me also. Did the dealer know what you were planning?

For others , here it is in writing. https://www.ford.com/resources/ford/general/pdf/towingguides/16rvtt_ford...

Have you asked Ford? The statement is "Exceeding these limitations may significantly reduce the performance of your towing vehicle." not you can't do it. If you go ahead with the purchase, get a statement from Ford that it is ok and will not void the warranty. Friend of mine did that for an F150 pulling a 5th Wheel.

The dealer thought it was a good idea for me to upgrade to the 19" wheels..Good idea ? I've been told not.

No one will help you at the risk of losing an upgrade.

19' Wheels

I'd ask him why. I'd spend the money on a brake control, but that's just me. Once I get it going, I'd like to make a panic stop with out problems.

Frontal Area

Obviously the dealer was trying to sell you on the upgrade. A limitation on the frontal area is all about wind resistance and the reduced fuel mileage, so, how would larger tires help your fuel mileage while towing? Obviously the larger tires would have a negative effect on your mileage!!!!

Scamp is the smallest "Stand Up" trailer available so, the only trailer you could possibly tow within the 30 sq ft limitation would be a "Pop-up", this makes no sense on a vehicle with 3,500 lbs towing capacity.

Sometimes you have to make a decision to ignore rules that make absolutely no sense!!!

If you like everything else about the Ford, I would go ahead with the purchase and simply ignore this stupid limitation.

PS: don't get the larger tires!!!!

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!

About Ford Escapes

The woman who bought our 13ft last year is using a Ford Escape as her TV and as far as I know she has had no problems, its not brand new but is the newer model unlike our 2012 we pulled with. Maybe she will step in here, she's on the forum

Year end prices

Your dealer should also be giving you a big year end discount on the 2016s. The Ford F150 is running 18-20 % off window price for the high end trucks.

They can't do that on the smaller cars but there should still be a discount/promotion. It pays to shop around.

I would think that the

I would think that the rounded front end of the Scamp would alleviate some of the "wind drag " .

Can I just go with that to put my mind at ease ?? :)

It's fine

3500 lb tow capacity with a 350lb hitch weight rating is a great tow capacity for a 13 Scamp and it will tow beautifully. The frontal area deal is basically nonsense and affects all towing no matter what the vehicle. This is a big part of why your mileage drops a bit when towing vs not towing. The Escape will be fine and if that's what you want get it, you won't even know the Scamp is back there.
