The door on the hot water heater gets scalding hot when the hot water heater is on. Is that normal? It's obviously labeled hot, but ours gets so hot that it would singe skin if you touched it. If it is normal, any suggestions for keeping people away? We have 2 young kids and can never use the hot water heater because of the fear of burning. Thanks!!

Hot water heater door
When the burner is lit it is going to get hot along with the furnace output. If you are not taking showers you can jut put the burner back to pilot It keeps the water fairly hot and saves gas after the initial burner heat of the water and keeps the panel heat down. If you mostly stay in campgrounds you can install a hott shot or litening rod to electrify your WH.
I used a wood stove in my den for 20 years with two kids and the only person who got slightly burned was just me loading wood. Just explain to the kids its hot and they can figure it out. Not trying to be smart just, old school.

if you have a water heater with a pilot light try this next time camping. We would just light our pilot light when we set up camp and never turn it to on. Had all the hot water we needed. Even enough for two showers in the morning. Doesn't use hardly any propane and nice n hot water. No overheating the door either.

The door only seems to get hot when the flame is on for the first time to heat the water in the tank. After that it cools down.
