Hitch mount Motorcycle ramp and 19' 5th wheel

I'll be buying a 19' Scamp 5th wheel and my TV will be a Dodge 2500 P/U. The Scamp will have a 3" raise to it. I was wondering if there would be room to have my motorcycle hitch ramp on the back of my pickp to haul my dual sport motorcycle? Has anybody done this? Or, is there a way to mount a motorcylce hitch ramp to the back of the trailer? The bike weighs about 400 lbs...

Any ideas or suggestions?

5er / bike rack

Scamp requires no more than 60" from the center of the ball to the corner of the rear truck bumper. There is not much room between the truck and trailer. The last 5' of the scamp frame is a single frame tube on each side under the dance floor. I have seen several fivers with bent rear frame tubes. Others have beefed them up but the extra supports can interfere with your grey water drain. IMO the Scamp stock frame will not handle 400 lbs. + the bracket weight. I have seen some mount brackets to the front bumper of the truck to carry dirt bikes.

Short bed

My new GMC Canyon has a pretty short bed, about 5' and I have a roll up bed cover that takes up 10" under the window. Measuring 60" from the bumper corner to the bed center puts the ball far to foreward. Will 4' work? that puts the ball over the axel.

Not at all.    My TV is a Dodge 1500 and there's not enough room between the camper and the bed to put a kids bicycle.

You might tow it behind your Scamp.  My 19' Scamp has a hitch receiver welded to the bumper.  Evidently the previous owner towed something back there.

Good luck,

Motorcycle Mount

You might consider mounting a "Wheel Lift" or ramp type device on the rear bumper to run the front wheel of the motorcycle up onto and strap the wheel into place. You can then let the rear wheel ride on the ground carrying the weight of the motorcycle.  You would also want to place Stop/Tail/Turn lights onto the rear of the motorcycle, you would also need side marker lights on the motorcycle to warn other drivers of an extension behind the trailer.

This would preclude you from backing up while the motorcycle is attached but that should not be too much of a problem.

In regards to PiperJim's receiver having already been mounted on the rear of his trailer, these are usually installed to allow a bike carrier (or other accessory i.e.: BBQ Grill) to be mounted in the receiver, these are not strong enough to pull another trailer attached to the Scamp.

Good Luck and...

Happy Scamping !!!

PS: If you do this I want to see pictures !!!!

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!

motorcycle mount

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

My Scamp has a reciever on the back too. I understand not much weight can be placed on the back of these trailers. I think I would even be leary of mounting a small rack and placing a cooler or generator on it. Short of buying a really small and light Enduro type motorcycle and hauling it on the front of my tow vehicle pickup, I may be out of luck. Dang...

Take a look at www.swivelwheel.com for a possible solution.

Scamp bumper mount storage box

We've ordered a 19 and I'm trying to figure our where to put all the stuff we use for set up; water hose and filters, jack pads, sewer connectors, TV cable, assorted tools, wheel chocks, lug wrench, jack, Fix-A-Flat, etc. Since there is no outside storage hatch (yet) I suppose I'll have to buy a box at Harbor Freight and hang all that stuff off the back. If theres a solution to that other than stuffing it in/out of the trailer everytime we pack out, I'd sure like to hear from you experienced Scampers. Also if tongue weight is +400#s how much weight do you think I should limit to the bumper weight?

Storage

bobnjudy:

I just store it in the pick-up bed.  I have a Contico heavy duty plastic tool box (about 21" tall x 30" wide x 16" deep) bolted into the bed of the truck in front of the 5th wheel hitch.

Not sure I understand your concern about "bumper weight". ......you referring to off the back of the Scamp, or the truck bumper?

scamp bumper

Yes, thats my idea. I wanted to have the 2" hitch receiver on the back of the Scamp then put a truck box kind of thing there for misc items. The truck bed will have the things that can get wet or don't particularly need to be secured like lawn chairs, door mats, swim noodles, etc. I probably won't have more than 75#s including hardware mounted to the back but just want to make sure it's a viable option before spending the $. Thanks much.
