I am in line to get the 13 ft scamp this fall. After reading comments on this forum, I'm not sure now if my towing vehicle will handle this and need to decide before I take the plunge. I am mentally challenged when it comes to numbers so here is what I have. Hope someone can help me.
My towing vehicle is a 1992 Toyota pickup (22R-E engine) 4 cylinder manual w/extended cab. On the door sticker it says: GVWR (lbs): 4550 . Also in the manual it mentions trailer weight w/towing package is 3500 lbs max. The Gross combination weight with trailer is 6800 lbs. I think the 13' Scamp is between 1200-1500 lbs.
I will be getting someone to attach a hitch (not sure what kind needed) and wiring/brake control.
My question is: Can my Toyota pull this scamp and what kind of modifications should I do with the pickup? I want to be sure what I'm paying for can be towed by the vehicle I have.

I'm towing my new Scamp with Jeep Wrangler 2 door, rated for 2000#.
But do check with a local trailer supply store, so you hear it from an expert.

Best info I can find on 92 Toyo PU w/2.4 I4 is 3500 tow capacity - 350lb tongue weight. If that is the case you are fine pulling a 13 which will be around 1900 lbs loaded and about 250lbs tw. I’d recommend you stop by a Toyota dealer and have them confirm the numbers as it’s a bit sketchy going that far back.

Also confirm that the Scamp in Question has brakes. Not all 13 foot do.
We have towed our 13 Scamp over a lot of the US including many of the western states. Our TV is a Nissan Frontier with a 2.5 liter engine and standard transmission. Over all we are happy with the performance of our TV. Your Toyota engine is 2.4 liter, just .1 L (one tenth liter) smaller so it should do fine. You will have to shift more often and anticipate the need to shift sooner. Also we have found that the hardest area of the country to drive (more shifting) is the Northeast. Good luck!

I'm towing my 13 foot 1984 with a 2006 Tacoma 2.7 liter . I think you'd be fine once you get the hang of it.
Those 22R motors are strong and bullet proof !

We pulled our 2017 13 footer the first two seasons with a 4 cylinder Subaru Forester with a standard transmission. It pulled ok but where we did have issues is when we had to stop on a fairly steep hill and then start moving again. I had to back down one hill to get a running start. On another, had to endure the smell of burning clutch. I think an automatic would have performed better on the hills. I traded the Subaru in for a Honda Ridgeline with a six cylinder and automatic transmission. It was the first new vehicle I purchased that didn't have a manual transmission. I believe your Toyota is much heftier than my Subaru was and think you will be fine pulling the 13 footer. And it is nice to have a pickup bed to toss your gear into. Good luck and have fun!
