13ft standard for family of 6?

Hello everyone, I'M so excited to be part of this forum.  My family and I have done the research and decided scamp is the trailer for us.  The difficult part is deciding between the 13ft and 16ft models.  We don't want a bathroom and feel we need the extra big bed that the 13ft offers. I was also uneasy about the $4,000 price jump that comes with going from the 13 to 16ft models but we can if we really need to.  Does anyone have experience sleeping 4 kids and two adults in the 13 ft model? My kids range in age from newborn to 9 years and still too young for tent camping outside the trailer. I was hoping to fit my travel playpen that's 2ft by 3ft in the trailer at night for sleeping and push it outside under the awning first thing in the morning since he is always our alarm clock anyway:) We will be using the trailer for sleeping and changing only and plan to eat all meals outside under the awning. All opinions and thoughts are appreciated!

That's going to be a really

That's going to be a really tight fit for a family of six. We have ordered a 13 footer for two, as the kids are out on their own now. With the big bed option and the front bunks, you will have only about 3 to 3.5 feet of space between the bed and bunks and probably less in width. I think you will outgrow that camper very quickly. Personally, I would get a 16 footer for a family of your size. Good luck. Anthony

6 in a Scamp

Welcome to the forum, glad to have you in the clubhouse.

We did half the country in a 13 Scamp when our two kids were toddlers. I have to be brutally honest here, I can't imagine adding two more people to a Scamp 13. Have you actually seen and toured the different Scamp trailers? If not, that would be your first step. The only two situations I could envision for you would be a 16 with no bath or side closet, side dinette and front bunks or the Scamp 19 with the bunks, loft, and rear dinette. The real problem on all the Scamp models will be the aisle/floor space is too small to accommodate that many bodies.

We outgrew our 13 Scamp when the kids hit age 9 & 6 (Scamp upper bunk weight limit was 80lbs and bunks are only 24" width) and moved to a 29' bunkhouse traditional trailer. We have now returned to Molded Fiberglass since the kids are in high school and ours is now mostly for my wife and myself.

This will be interesting to watch your journey and don't mean to discourage, but while not necessarily impossible, what you're wanting to do will be a very difficult process to accommodate comfortably in Scamp models.

Greg, thanks for the response

Greg, thanks for the response. I did go see one this weekend.  Those 13 foot models were very small! We are now looking for a 16ft or larger.  I really wish we could do the 5th wheel but just got a new 2016 Ford transit 12 passenger van and a new tow vehicle is not in the budget.  I see you have an escape. I watched their video today and those look really nice!

6 in a Scamp

I'm so glad you got to see a 13 in person. It really helps once you can visualize the space. The Scamp 16 Floorplan 7 would be the closest to fitting your group. Now if you keep adding more, even that one won't work for you. surprise

Keep us posted on your hunt and ask any questions you may have along the way.

I checked out the #7

I checked out the #7 floorplan. It looks good if the side dinette makes out into a bed? Does anyone know if it can be ordered without the side dinette so there would be just empty space for a floorsleeper? Thanks, so much for the #7 suggestion!

Plan 7

Yes, it does convert to a bed and you could ask Scamp if they could make that a second bunk bed. If they won't it would be an easy project to do and then you'd be able to sleep 6 in beds.

Go with a 16'

I don't think you would be happy with a 13' either.  What about a used 16' Scamp or Casita?  There are more 16s for sale vs. 13s, and the prices seem a bit more reasonable too.  Look on fiberglassrv-4-sale.com, maybe one nearby that you can scope out at least.  Good luck!

larger family

Kristin, I ordered a 13' for my wife and I a couple months ago. We had not seen or been in a Scamp, only videos and pics. We had the opportunity to walk in both the 13' and 16' yesterday, thank you Dan . I will change my order tomorrow to the 16'. unless you really like being CLOSE, a 13' FEELS tight to me for 2.

What tow vehicle are you planning to use?

Mark

KIDS

We have three kids, when they were growing up we had a tent trailer. It was an eight foot model that opened up to 16 feet and had one queen size bed and two full size beds, a furnace and ice box.It towed easy and was very low cost. The down side was setting it up and taking it down all the time. After the kids grew up we got our scamp.
