I put the accurate description of my problem in the subject line, but I really just wanted to type, "Help!!" I noted this happening this spring, but forgot entirely as the Scamp sat for most of the summer. In getting it polished up for a fall trip, I realized that water had collected behind the spare, along with a good deal of grime. The picture shows it after I took the magic eraser sponge and "Awesome" cleaner to it. I'm afraid it's under the surface for good. (bad)
Any advice? Thankfully it's behind the spare and once the tire is back in place and the cover on, I'm the only one who will know it looks this awful. Except for all of you who know about it now.

Its a badge of honor and been on every Scamp I've owned. I have never tried to buff it out, but it would need an orbital polisher and the 3M Fiberglass restorer to have a shot at it. Probably won't get it all out but would buff out the lions share.

I'm glad that I'm in good company, which is probably better than having a flaw-free camper anyway.
If you put a thin trash bag over your spare with the opening at the bottom before installing the spare it will prevent the staining on the trailer and keep the black stains off the white tire cover. Put your spare cover over the trash bag and spare.

Thanks Eddie. I've put the bag on so at least it won't get worse. The cover is starting to discolor, but since my vinyl floors do the same thing with rubber-backed rugs I've learned that exposing it to sunlight helps that issue. However, preventing it sounds like the best bet.
In case someone happens on this post from last year and could use this extra bit of information I learned. Sunlight helps immensely. My decision to store the Scamp for the winter, based on information and circumstances, led me to take the tire off. That left my uncovered Scamp with the back facing the weak winter sun for the whole winter. (Which I think may be finally over after our mid April dump of 20 inches of snow - geez!)
The sun did a wonderful job where cleaners couldn't. There is still a faint outline and the finish is actually a bit marred from the tire rubbing on it, but at least the stain is better.
