Which hitch?

We just purchased a 13' '15 model. We'll use our 2008 Subaru Outback -- after we get a hitch. Two local Subaru dealers say Subaru only installs 1 1/4" balls. Will that work? Is there an adapter we'll need to get it to fit the 2" ball? Anything else we should consider at this point regarding hitch installation?

Hitch

I think your dealer meant 1/1/4'' draw bar/ receiver. I have a 15 outback and they used a tubular hitch with a 2'' draw bar/ receiver. You put the size ball you want on the draw bar 2'' ball is what is required for the scamp. If you have a 1 1/4 inch receiver/ drawbar installed it will not cause any obstacle to towing.

Hitch

We had a 2012 Outback, V6. The dealer could only install the Subaru factory stock 1 1/4" hitch receiver (Scamp requires a 2" receiver). When we tried to replace the dealer hitch with a 2" after market hitch for the 13' Scamp, the installer had to cut off part of the dealer hitch to install the 2'. Also, be sure whoever installs the hitch can install the 7-pin wiring, especially the power wire and brake control wiring (if needed). We did not use the electric brakes when we had our Outback and it handled braking just fine at 55 mph and below.  My best advice is to avoid the dealer and go to your local RV company for the towing package.

Class I hitch

1-1/4” may be OK with some Scamps. A Class I hitch usually has a 1-1/4" square receiver opening and class I hitches are weight carrying hitches rated up to 2000 lbs. gross trailer weight (GTW) with a 200 lbs. maximum trailer tongue weight.
