AC install. Please help!

Good evening friends. I am in the process of restoring my Grandfather's 86 13' Scamp. Number 1 on the list is an AC install. I have bought and already installed the AC but i have a condensation problem. If you see the pictures below you will see where I have drilled a hole in the fender well. This hole lines up with an air hose fitting that i threaded into the lowest point of the AC. I thought the water would just drain out the bottom of this onto the wheel but after trying it it doesn't work. I cross drilled the threads so the water wouldn't have to "climb" up the threads and fall over into the fitting. The water is dripping down the front of the wheel well and running out next to the door. I even tested my method before installing and it worked fantastic. Can anyone here enlighten me on how to build a catch pan or something to not let the water run down onto the wood sub floor and get it out the camper?

Thanks for the help. I have looked thru the internet until i am sick of looking.

Condensate issue

One person who did this modification put a paint roller pan in as a catch basin, drilled and sealed a drain outlet and added a flexible tube he could redirect below the floor deck. He used a metal pan, but I can't help but wonder if a plastic pan might be better. Be careful of the material in a plastic pan though, because some of those plastics just don't take to any adhesives.

I am interested in any dimensional information for supports and openings

you could share on your modification, as it is on my to do list. Also, which AC unit did you decide to purchase?

condensate issue

Hi Sandra,

I am terrible at taking pictures but i will try my best to explain what I did. My trailer had an air conditioner in it at one point. My granddaddy bought it back in the early 2000s and during that time it never had an AC installed. Anyway, mine has had a big hole below the closet door ever since. Basically all I did was go to walmart and buy a Haier 5000 BTU unit and set it in there. I framed around the front of the unit making it look great. The back of the AC sits directly on the wheel well. What I did to repair the problem that made me create this thread on this particular AC is it had a plug in the lowest point of the of the housing. I took it out and drilled a hole in the wheel well, before sitting the AC in place i made a silicon "dam" around the hole and set the AC in place leaving the condensation hole lined up with my hole cut in the wheel well. This way the water drips on the tire.

On the outside of my camper below the aluminum seal there is a vent that is something like 12 x 12 i created an air duct here off the back of the AC to vent the hot air out. Then I built a shelf in the closet above the seam, I also have 4 x12 vent above the seam this allows fresh air to be pulled into the space cooling the motor and condenser.

If interested please send me a pm and I will sen you my #. I'll be glad to help.

AC Add

This originally was the location for the Scamp AC when ordered, so there are many early model trailers running around with AC in the bottom of the closet. Every mod I've seen as well fashions some type of pan, metal or plastic that is mounted on top of the wheel well and the AC unit sits in the pan. The pan has a drip line that is then run out through the sub-floor in the bottom of the closet. I'd get the dimensions of the space for the pan and then go search around at Home Depot, etc. for something that might work

Here are some stock condensate drain pans for AC units, but don't know if dimensions are right for this application
