Camper insurance

We received the call from Scamp, the build of our 13 foot standard has begun. I believe at some point they will send me the vin number of the camper so that I can insure it. I forgot to ask when we went over the order. Can someone tell me what I should be expecting in cost to insure a 13 footer. Thanks.

Anthony, congrats on your build starting. It will be soon now.

From my reading insurance for your new egg depends a lot on where you live, what company you use and what type of coverage you choose.

I read about a great plan which included replacement cost only to find the company did not service where I live.

Good hunting!

Mark

Remember your trailer is covered under your auto policy when towing. Only coverage needed is for off-hook at camping or storage, so you don't really need any Collision. If stored in a garage as ours used to be it was covered under the house policy. Good Sam I hear offers replacement, and some others. Costs will vary greatly, but mine don't cost that much through USAA, usually under $100 annual.

trailer is covered under auto policy?

Check your policy first, remember that some car policies do not even cover the car.

Auto Policy

Always a good idea to check, but if you have comp and collision on an auto policy that doesn't cover towing it may be a good time to change insurers. smiley

A few things (I used to work

A few things (I used to work in personal lines insurance)

First, every state is different.  Auto insurance is highly regulated, so coverage options, what is automatically included, etc. varies state to state.  For that reason someone who says "get this" or "only pay this" aren't helping you unless they live in their state and made good decisions with their own coverage, which you cannot tell.

In general, while liability does automatically extend to the camper once hitched up, comprehensive coverage does not, and in some states nor does collision coverage.   You are insuring the camper for damage caused by accident AND from loss while unhitched (theft, etc.)  The typical cost is between $125-$250 per year, depending on state and coverage limits.

Your best bet is to start with your auto insurer.  Rates are based on value, not length, so call them, they will need VIN and pruchase price.

good luck!

Good info

So question for you, if you have the coverage on the auto policy covering towing based on your home state and you are pulling through states that don't allow that coverage, is your coverage still in effect based on the policy being taken out in your home state? Since we're all pulling through a variety of states, the concern would be how that works if an accident in a different state than the policy?
