Scamp Pickup in Winter

I've been an avid reader of this forum for a while, and I just joined after making a certain exciting purchase. I recently placed an order for my Scamp 5th wheel and was given a December 10th completion date. Has anyone else picked up their rig during the Minnesota winter? How did it go?

The folks at Scamp said that a lot of people do indeed pick up at that time of year. They advised to just remain glued to the weather forecast and take it slow and steady. I don’t have a lot of experience hauling an RV, so I’m open to other options, such as pushing back my pickup date. Delivery is not ideal, as the cost is quite high for a pacific northwest dweller. Plus, I think having the Backus experience is valuable for a newbie like me.

I’m very grateful to the community for creating this wonderful resource. Thanks very much!

Winter driving

Welcome and congratulations on your exciting (and dare I say wise) purchase! I picked up my Scamp 13  in February and happened to have a 40 degree sunny day. I washed off the bit of road salt and had no problem with my winter pick up. I'm very used to winter driving, have an all wheel drive vehicle, and word on SOI is that Scamps tow really well, so I wasn't particularly worried about the time of year. If you are used to snowy winter driving, I bet you'll be fine. If you are able to allow yourself time in case the weather slows you down, you'll be less apt to press on if it is a bit treacherous. If you aren't comfortable with snowy winter driving, maybe your other options are better. (Remember snow in March is normal and possible in April too, so keep that in mind if you push your date back to avoid snow.)

Only you know what's best!

Congratulations on your new Scamp! Sounds like you had a wonderful travel day in February. You're right about those unpredictable early spring months; waiting until then may not guarantee safer road conditions. From one Sarah to another, thank you for sharing your experience.

December pickup

I would also say if you allow yourself some flexibility and watch the weather forecast, you should be OK. The Scamp will have new tires on it! I find towing the 5th wheel is very stable and easy. If necessary, take it slow. If bad weather surprises you, pull off and wait it out with the furnace on.
