Hey All,
One of my wheels on my 1984 13 foot trailer is pretty shaking when shaking it with your hands. I'm not familiar with Scamp axles & wheel bearings at all, but I'm guessing the wheel bearing is the reason for the shaky wheel. Does anyone know where you can buy replacement wheel bearings for Scamps? Or would a simple repack job fix the issue? Any help is much appreicateed.
Spencer
There should be slight play but not much. This post will get you started:

From Scamp Trailers site:
"Older Scamp's (Scamp trailers made in the 70's and early 80's) with a 1" spindle use a L44643 bearing for both outer and inner bearing on each wheel. Scamp trailers switched to a larger 1 1/16 spindle to accommodate larger load capacity. These use a L44649 bearing, both outer and inner bearing on each side. Scamp trailers with axles carrying 2500 pounds or more use a L44649 outer bearing on each side and a L68149 inner bearing on each side."
These are available most everywhere online or at auto parts stores.

Yes, as Greg said there should be some play in the bearings, but if the tire tread moves more than about a 1/16 inch, I would worry. Once you have the wheel of the ground, turn it slowly and feel and listen for any grinding noise from the bearings (not from the brake shoes dragging). Other than the brake dragging lightly, it should be very smooth.
