Axle Replacement

I'm going to have to replace my axle on a 2000 19' Scamp.

I got a quote from Scamp, but the shipping is pretty high since I am pretty far from the factory. A few hundred I could spend elsewhere.

I also got a quote from a local trailer supply house and they said they only needed the dimension of the mounting points, outside of frame to outside of frame. Sounds good until I think about the tire needing to be pretty close to center of the wheel well. It seems I would need to know how much of the axle extends beyond the frame to really get a decent fit. I plan on calling them to discuss it, but they really specialize in work trailers.

My welder can deal with either, but he can't make it fit if it doesn't.

So, have others used non-Scamp sourced axles? Any problems or pitfalls I should look out for? Should I just stomach the extra shipping and get the part from the factory?

Axle

Keith,

I just had a new axle and risers installed on my 1988 5er.  My wife and I made the 700 mile trip to Scamp to pick it up along with a new hitch and other parts.  Our original axle was welded in.  As I recall the arm angle on the axle should be 22.5 degrees down.  The torsion bar arms need to clear the frame. I have forgotten what the hub flange face to hub flange face dimension is.  If I had it to do over, I would make the trip again.

Our axle was collapsed and dead.  If the axle would have had some suspension left, we would have towed the trailer to the factory for the repair.  I would certainly consider adding the risers.  Truck beds have gotten taller and the risers help increase the clearance over the bed.

Hopefully, Eddie will give you the needed info, he has a wealth of Scamp knowledge.

Thanks Bob. Your positive

Thanks Bob. Your positive experience is one reason the axle is high on our list of repairs.

If the local axle fits it would be easier, cheaper, and probably quicker. If it doesn't fit it would be a huge pain in the rear and a waste of money. I guess I'm just wondering if others have had fit issues with non-Scamp axles.

Dexter Torflex #10

Keith

Sounds like your Axle guy has not dealt with a  molded fiber glass trailer. When ordering a new Dexter torflex axle you fill out a worksheet with about ten specifications. The mounting brackets are wider on the axle than frame  and the brackets stick out about 1" past the frame on the outside. Measure your existing axle, outside of the mounting bracket to the outside. Then measure your hub face to face. Redneck trailer is a distributor for Dexter axles and are all over the country. My local Redneck charges no shipping if you pick up the axle.

Another option is to contact Lil House Customs in TX. they specialize in Casita repairs and mods. but I'm sure he will do a great job on a Scamp axle replacement. Larry will have to order your axle since the Casita Axles are about 1" wider.

I would definitley opt for going to the factory, as you will be dollars ahead and they will accomplish this while you wait, or go for lunch.Think about it, but I went to the factory for mods and was totally pleased. Its worth the drive for something as important as a axle.

Folks,

Doug makes a good point.  If it had not been a 700 mile tow with a dead axle and if the hitch was already installed, we would have had the axle installation done at the factory.  If you can get the correct axle from another supplier and have confidence in the folks installing it, you can get done that way.

By the way, when you get a new axle, you also get new brakes! It comes as an assembly.
