New to Me Egg

My wife, Lilly and I purchased our first Egg. It is a 1998 model with air and a Fantastic Fan.  It has an after market 120 volt refrigerator and  furnace.  It has new cushions and curtains.  The furnace tries to light and the axle is tired.  I think my neighborhood furnace guy will help me out and a new axle may be in order.  My wife and I towed it home today behind out 2 liter Mazda CX-5 we were in fairly flat country and It towed nicely.

We looked a nice Casita Patriot yesterday in Mayfield, Ky.  If it would have had a furnace, we would have towed it home.  We had considered larger Scamps, but in the end we didn't want to purchase a more powerful SUV to tow with.  we are telling ourselves that 13 footer is just right.

We now have our Scamp and this weekend we will be Scamper Campers.

Scamper Campers.

Congrats

And Welcome to the clubhouse. Furnace is probably just a clean out. Get us a side exterior pic and we can tell you how the axle is looking.

You'll enjoy the fantastic fan.... Now get Scampin!

Tired Axle

Hi Greg,

My computer skills are sorely lacking.  I will get some pictures and post them on the weekend.  On a 13' Scamp, does anyone have a usable dimension range from the ground passing through the center of the hub to the top of the wheel opening. this might take some of the axle guess work of replacement.

Axle test

Welcome. The best test is the bounce test. Have some go inside and bounce the trailer up and down. Look under the trailer at the axle and if the swing arms do not move very much and the shock is being taken by the tire sidewalls, Its time for an axle. If you have a Dexter axle (square tube) the diamond on the end of the swing arm should point up and down with the trailer jacked up. Being over 15 YO and you suspect it is bad, it is more than likely dead. If you are in the mid west and need an axle the best price and fastest turn around is at the Scamp factory. (Appointment required.)

Axle Test

Eddie,

We thank you for the welcome and the information.  My thoughts are that the axle is indeed dead. We may wait and have a new axle installed on out next trip to Minot, N.D. Minot is where our son and his family live.

I think that my door hinges are in need of new bushings. The door appears to be sagging. The lock is riding low on the striker and the bottom of the door has a gap. Also, the gap at the top of the door is much larger that the gap at the door sides.

My plan is to pull the hinge pins and and fab new bushings out of nylon, if I add a quarter inch of length to them that would make things much better.

Our plans are to go camping this week, The weekend question is can we sleep comfortably on a 44" bed.  My wife has told me that is is not safe to have my ticklish feet near her face.

Bed

To quote a wise lady "don't think of it as being to small, think of it as an opportunity to sleep

close", My wife and I sleep fine in our bed, it just takes a little getting used to.

Door alignment issue

Check under the trailer below the hinge side of the door. At the end of the front frame extension for the walkway there is a piece of plywood that attaches to the shell with fiberglass below the door hinges. Sometimes the plywood will rot or come unbonded from the frame ear or shell. Also check for floor rot under the bench seat by the door.  both these issues will cause door sag.

In Addition

Also make sure you still have the wrought iron support posts from the kitchen counter to the upper cabinets, a fairly intact closet structure and an aluminum 3/4" rod on the inside front side of the door.

Door Hinge Bushings

You can buy new bushings for the door hinges, and a complete set of new hinges, at the SCAMP store. We have replaced ours twice (in 40 years): they do wear out!
