Hi we are very excited to be members of SOI

I am retired , I have been in the auto restoration business for basically most of my life . I had my own VW restoration business for almost 30 years. My actual first project in the world of mechanics was when I was 4 years old my parents bought me a brand new tricyle which I took entirely apart and put back together in its original condition . Well and as they say the rest is history .  I also probably inherited some of my skills and  abilities from my father as he built camping trailers , my dads intials were actually RVC .

The scamp first caught my interest back in 1999 , but I never had the opportunity to purchase one . It just amazes me at the scarcity there are of them here for sale in Washington state . Just recently I found one in a field that had just been sitting there for over 10 plus years . The elderly Gentleman who owned it had purchased it brand new from the factory , I believe it has all or most of the options that came with the 16 ft 1988 scamp at that time . I am just amazed at the incredible condition the floor is still in even after all these years the shell also seems to be in solid condition even though it is covered with moss and the interior has had some unwelcome house guests ( rodents ) for the past 10 plus years .

I can hardly wait to get started on getting our scamp back to its original factory condition . I welcome any suggestions and advice that anyone may have to assist me with the restoration process . Sandy and I are looking forward to showing you all the before and after pictures !

We both are looking forward to making new friends and having new adventures with the SOI community,

Happy Trails Everyone

Scamps and VW's

Hi Steve and Sandy and Welcome!

I took a very similar egg journey to yours. I restored my Dad's 1967 VW Beetle which became my first car and built a Scorpion GT Kit car out of it one of my summers home from college.  Old body off and Scorpion GT emerges, Gull Wing doors and all!

I restored an 1981 Scamp 13 for my first egg and working on snuffing up a 2005 Escape 17 currently.  Can't wait to see your pics and progress on your 88 16 Scamp.  We have a brand new ScampCamp Far West up near you in May.  Bring a tent if the 16 isn't ready!

Great to have you and Sandy on board and we hope to meet you one day soon.

Can you tell me more details about the scamp camp that you spoke about in your email ?

Scamp Camp Far West

Hi Steve-n-Sandy

Our Scamp Camp Far West is down here in Central California - just 50 miles east of Sacramento.  That event will be held mid-May.  You and your conversion van are certainly invited to join us.  You can find the information in this forum under Gatherings-Upcoming Events -- Announcing the 1st Annual ScampCamp Far West.

On another note:  You are also more than welcome to join us at or Northern California: Nor Cal Roundup in September.  That information can also be found in the Gatherings - Upcoming Events section.

You also might like to try the Bandon, Oregon gathering in mid-July.  There you will be able to find lots of different brands of fiberglass trailers.   Some of these trailers have had extensive modifications.  So far, there have been 85 sign-ups.

Welcome to SOI!

Hi Earl !

Earl , thanks for all the info we are just learning away around the website . We live in the San Juan Islands (Guemes Island ) we are good friends of the owners of the Guemes Island Resort a beautiful resort located right on the water , perhaps sometime in the future we could have a camping event here .

Thanks again

Steve and Sandy
