New (to me) 1997 16' Scamp has 6 pin connector, should I convert to 7 pin?

I ordered a Tekonsha Primus IQ brake controller and I'll be wiring it up in my 2012 Suzuki Vitara which currently has a 4 pin flat connector. The trailer has a 6 pin round connector. Since installing the brake controller in the Vitara will be a big job with lots of routing wires I'm thinking it may make sense to convert to the more standard 7 pin connector and I'm looking for opinions. Would it be worthwhile to do the extra work to go to 7 pin or is 6 pin fine?

By the way I really wanted to get the Autowbrake controller but 4x the cost of the Tekonsha was hard to justify. People who have the Autowbrake seem to really love it.

6/7 Pin Plug

Newer Scamps use the seventh/center pin for back-up lights. Your older trailer may not have them.

Here's a link to diagrams for usual wiring: https://www.dieselhub.com/towing/trailer-wiring.html

You could probably put a now more common 7 pin plug on your tow vehicle and get an adapter to match your existing trailer plug from etrailer.com.

Recommend the change

There are 7 to 6 pin adapters sold and wired in two different ways. If you get the wrong wired adapter it will lock up your brakes when plugged in. Here is a pretty good wiring solution sold on Amazon. I usually wire it in just inside the shell. It also uses the Bargman wiring color code the same as scamp.
