I'm having 12V wiring problems with my 87 Scamp. Having never done any wiring but I would like to, is there an easy way for me to learn online?

First start here in our Solar Resources on battery section

In the battery section make sure you read through 12v side of life part 1 and part 2 which is a base explanation of 12 systems
Must have tool for all wiring is a multimeter.
Ask all questions as you progress. The good news is that 12v wiring is actually pretty basic stuff and much easier to learn and deal with than household wiring.

Thanks! I'll be replacing my wornout battery with a Group 24. On the Solar side, I have a small panel on the roof of my Scamp, but no controller. I'm looking at a PMW (30 Amp) HQST 30 Amp PWM Smart Solar Charge Controller with LCD Display for my system. Your thoughts. Currently, my panel has a "extension cord" type wire running from the panel to the battery clips. Your thoughts on how to run the wire to the controller and to the battery would be greatly appreciated
I wouldn’t get anything smaller than a group 27 marine battery. Not much difference in cost and it will usually fit in the same battery box. With a solar setup you want the most robust battery system you can do.
You definitely don’t want a solar panel over about 15–20 watts going directly to a battery with no controller for numerous reasons, but the top one is it can easily boil ur battery. Do you know what the roof panel is rated?

Cool, definitely a bump up for battery.
Where are you thinking of mounting the controller?? Usually, recommended to be as close to the battery as possible. Also, want to make sure you are using 10 ga wire at a minimum to make your wiring runs from panel to controller and controller to battery. Some will say to use 8 ga but many controllers make it a bit difficult to use 8 ga. You might also think about the future of adding an external port to plug in an additional portable panel down line while you are doing the project. Depends on usage and amount of boondocking one expects to do. Are all your lights over to LED?
There should be a sticker or plate somewhere on that roof panel that gives the information. Just remember to not step or go up on a molded fiberglass trailer roof, it can crack the gelcoat, so always use a good ladder to inspect roof items.

Be a little careful while working on the panel wiring. Photoelectric panels generate electricity all the time there is light on them. I don't think the smaller RV type panels would hurt you much but it could certainly get your attention. While working on the wiring I would put a cover over the panel. Something to the block light like a blanket or tarp. Good luck.
