I am spending two weeks in Colorado - NC region, Rocky Mountain National Park - and would like to camp on public lands - state forest, wilderness - since I have a dog. Does anybody have any favorite spots or recommendations? This would be my "base" for day trips. Also, I am a photographer looking for wildlife - especially the mountain goats and bighorn sheep.

My favorite areas were in the Glenwood Springs/Rifle area, but much has changed in the years since I've been in CO. There used to be quite a bit of good wild areas West of Ft Collins with some good fishing lakes, and the Gunnison area is excellent as well.
