Future Scamp 13' Owner Questions

Hi Scamp Owners,

We are excited to get our 13' Design 2-larger bed Scamp June 2021.(A jump up from our pop-up of 25 years) Please help us in answering some questions we have.

  1. Could a spring rod work on the camper windows?
  2. What are the dimensions of the floor space?
  3. Is there a need for a step to get into the camper? What's the height?
  4. Which do you prefer to  use? Sleeping bags or sheets and blankets? Is one easier?
  5. How much weight can the back hitch take? What do you use if for? Bikes?
  6. Are there cabinets above the bed/table area near the ceiling? Or are those extra?

Thanks so much for answering.

Robin and Joe

SOME OPINIONS

We tow with a marginal undersized Subaru Crosstrek and have the smaller bed but the bath in front

Likely no need for a out door step It is a short step up. Maybe 10-12 inches depending on the site you camp on. We did have a site where the front was very high to get level and a small folding step was nice to have.

We do sheets and blankets. But the seams between the cushions can be annoying at times. but easier to store than bags

We use our rear hitch for two bikes max. and it needs to be very securely anchored so no side to side sway allowed. It can induce or exaggerate a camper sway if left to move around. We even use light ratchet or motorcycle straps from the top of the rack to the bumper ends. The 13 is short trailer and it can sway if not enough tongue weight or loose items on the rear hitch.

Weigh your scamp tongue just as you would pull it loaded It must have 10% minimum tongue weight. Even a 13 gal tank of water  and two bikes can change the way it pulls dramatically.

On our2019 the upper cabinets were optional and very nice for mall items and clothing.

Did you order it with electric trailer brakes. We do and like them very much in wet or down hill breaking conditions

Congratulations and enjoy.

Response to anwers

Thank you so much for your very informative response. Yes we ordered with electric brakes and AC. And do you think the windows could take spring rods for the curtains? Instead of the pop rivets? Or no.

After reading the bed was 44", we decided on the bigger bed-don't mind losing cabinet space. We sleep in a full size bed at home and 44" is less. No complaints from you about the bed size you have?

Thanks again

On the bedding question, i

On the bedding question, i started with a 6" foam mattress overlay on the rear dinette cushions with sheets, comforter, etc.  It was comfy but a PITA to make and consigned the dinette to a permanent bed.  I now use a nice thick wool blanket over the cushions with a sheet on top.  Very cozy and reasonably comfortable, and a snap to put away in the morning.  I like having my dinette for day use

Response to bedding

That sounds like a perfect compromise. Thanks

Cozy

Yes the smaller bed is tight at times and the larger one would be nice . But with the bath up front the remaining space seemed too cramped for us. Somehow we manage I am 5-11 and my Wife is 5-4 so she gets the wall and fits better between the rounded corners. But we wanted the cabinet space. We are coming from a 26 foot class "C" motorhome and it is still a serious learning curve in the second season.. With the marginal tow vehicle we did not get the roof top AC but did have all the structure and wiring pre installed if we change our mind. We also have the furnace and as expected it is a bit too powerful and can get very warm  before it shuts off after reaching the set temp we prefer to use a small ceramic space heater if we are plugged in. We had additional 110 and 12 v plugs added by the entrance. and outside near the rear.  and it works nicely having the extra. We spend 90% out side and it is mainly to escape the weather and sleep. We took a weekend and made the trip to Evelands a couple months before we got the call it was being built for real and learned a lot just seeing a couple with different options and combinations. It was nice to meet the people and see them being built Nothing like seeing it in person. We had only seen a couple older ones up close before then. But a year+ and we are still very happy. You asked about curtain rods and I do not know what you would attach them to . I get your concern about more holes and Pop rivets but no issues so far beyond we lost a couple snap caps sneaking thru some trees on a two track road and had to buy more. But they were $10 for a bag of them. Do you have the bath?? We too set the dinette up every day to have it for breakfast, lunch and weather events. You must put it back down when traveling though.

26' to 13'? WOW

Interesting going from a 26' camper to a 13'. Yikes. Good for you. Camping the 25 years with a pop-up we went cross country twice with our kids...mostly we just used it for sleep. Joe took out the sink and stove and made another bed for our third child. So we're thinking we'll have the same habits with the Scamp.

We did get the bathroom and not the bunks-though that was last minute we decided that. Our kids convinced us, saying as we got older the bath would be good. So we bit the bullet.

What else would you think we should get?  We did get the AC, thinking of the hot southwest. And we got electric brakes. Anything crucial? That you wish  you had or are glad you do have?

Thanks

Check with your sales person about cabinets

Your salesperson can tell you about what cabinets are standard in your Scamp layout. We added extra cabinets in the rear for more storage with the larger bed. Also added more outlets and electric brakes. Had an electronic brake controller installed at a camper dealer on the Ford Edge.

Thank you for your advice

Thanks for your advice on the cabinets. We will check that out. 2021Scamps come with the controller in the camper controlled by Bluetooth.

Salesman said that quite a few things come with the Scamp standard price that previously were extra.

So appreciate all the tips from this group. Invaluable.

Thanks again.
